rwtomkins Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 So we're back to Ford SD 5W40 or Millers XFE-PD 5W40! On page one of this thread, gazza007 suggested saving yourself some money by choosing the Millers product at Quote
italiastar Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 I have read on the net that these engines do require top ups, but my 130BHP has just covered 5000miles and the level has not moved (it was meticulously run in between 15 and 2000 miles though). German and Swedish sell an approved oil under the "Quantum" brand, which happens to be VWs aftermarket brand, for around Quote
seatkid Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I'm also tempted to carry out an interim oil change, but am worried about warranty issues - does anyone have any thoughts? Naaah! Never spoil em while they're young - leads to bad habits later.... Plus you'll get the dealer all confused (mine was), and they'll pinch your good oil to put in their souped up corsa and they'll overfill yours with 20/50 and they'll......<continuous ranting> Quote

Dave-G Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 mines just had its 2nd annual service...ford dealer used castrol performance 5w-30 oil. ;) ;) when quized on this I was told not to beleive everything I read on "the net" ;) Quote
seatkid Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Dave dave dave dave dave, You should know better by now - how long you been a member of this forum? Don't you believe us? "Castrol performance" is not a UK oil type as far as I can tell - its a generic marketing term "Castrol - performance oil". They could have used anything from plain GTX to a synthetic - did you see the bottle? (Don't tell me, its in a tank) But then on the net.... Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Buyer beware... You've been palmed off. Quote
Taliska Posted February 4, 2004 Author Report Posted February 4, 2004 ford dealer used castrol performance 5w-30 oil. For a start it should be 5W-40 - at least it says so in my manual for the 115 PD! Taliska Quote
grifjl Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I asked VW to move our Sharan (115hp) Tdi (02 plate) to Variable Servicing yesterday and they have used Castrol SLX2 (506.01). This was the 20,000 service and they said I probably won Quote
Dave-G Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Er; so what happens to the other items normally examined in the next annual service? Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 I like a lot of people looking for oil for my 99 Tdi was quite perplexed by all the different types of oil; so armed with the VW 500.00 spec went to my local Audi / VW dealer and bought a semi synthetic called Quantum Synta 10W40 for the grand sum of unit price Quote
grifjl Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 'Other items' to be serviced don't actually need looking at every year. That's the whole idea of variable servicing. The manufacturers were getting moaned at by the Fleet buyers who were having to bring the cars in too often. Hence, variable servicing technology was brought in to resolve and less frequent visits required. In addition, I believe that evey other service is simply the oil change one (30K, 50K, etc). So that's all we miss!!! As I have the SLX2 oil in then there is no worry. Quote
