Unbelievably I have to put some oil in my Gal at only 5000 miles - maybe she's just running in and being a bit thirsty...

Anyone have any recommendations as to which oil to put in?

Thanks all,

Normally a semi-synthetic 10/40 or a fully synthetic 5/40 is the recommended oil for a Tdi Galaxy, but being a "new" vehicle, I would personally go to my local dealer and get oil from them or if it is using a lot of oil ask them check it out. They would then top it up too I would expect, so if you were to have problems in the future they can`t turn round and say "sorry but you put the wrong oil in". I have a `99 Tdi and recently changed the oil. The shop I went to had so many different charts giving anything from 5/40 to 15/40 that they phoned Millers Oils and they recommended 10/40 semi-synthetic but 5/40 fully-synthetic would also be suitable.

This has been covered in previous posts. Yours is a PD engine and it requires oil to VW specification 505.01 - (note the 01 and not 00). Oil to this spec is fully synthetic, expensive and rare outside of dealers.

Look for VW505.01 on the can's list of approved specs.

Anything else e.g. VW505.00 is not suitable and would in theory invalidate your warranty!

The PD diesels typically use about 1 Litre between changes.

Which for a diesel is good.

Most dealers will give you a Litre for this purpose at the Service, in my experience.

VW505.01 is the right spec. Try and buy branded from Motor Factors.

See the following link for your oil, I posted for Millers & a mail order stockist in Cheshire.

I think you will also find that the Millers 5W/40 XFE-PD is a Semi-Synthetic.

in my opinion the safest thing you can do is go to your ford dealer's parts dept and pick up a can of the oil recommended for your vehicle in the handbook, which is the Ford Formula SD 5W40 (a semi-synthetic designed for this engine and meeting VW505.01). if for some reason you don't want to do this, then as the others say above, it's very important you use an oil that meets VW505.01. what i certainly wouldn't do is go to your garage's service dept and ask them to top it up with their own stuff. they will use some one-size-fits-all rubbish that probably won't kill your engine overnight but is very unlikely to conform with VW505.01 so won't exactly do it much good. maybe some people will think this is being over-cautious but you've got a nearly new vehicle there and i'm sure you want to take good care of it.

Thanks all, think I'll truck round to the VW dealer round the corner from work and get some of what they can supply (VW 505.01). I don't think that Ford can complain too much if I put VW oil in!

How much oil is this beast going to drink?

I had a 1.9TDi 90 bhp in an Audi that only drank 5L (that I provided between services) in the 8 years and 160k miles that I drove her - she was driven hard too! She needed topping up every 5k miles until she reached 90k miles, then she needed topping up every 3k miles after that.

I take your point that buying from VW will be more expensive, but it's very close by and surely she's not going to drink lots of oil.

Another alternative is a Halfords in the other direction from work...

Decided to go and see if Castrol made an oil... can't get the www.castrol.com website to work when I look at the 'office locator'...

Went to the german site instead (much easier to use even though I'm not a german speaker) - they have a specific 505.01 oil topup.

Anyone found any of this in the UK?

Not seen that in UK yet, Had a good look at a few Castrol oil bottles last evening, as it happens, and none of the different grades of GTX (including GTD) is marked as being suitable for VW 505.01.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that I won't need to top up between services.....

Ummm...

Went to Halfords today and looked at their flip chart for Galaxys and it said use '10W-40' - read the back of the oil bottle and it doesn't mention VW 505.01. Looked at other Castrol products and the only reference I found (on the fully synth I think) was 'DON'T use this instead engines requiring 505.01'.

Asked at desk about the 5W-40 / 10W-40 disparity and was told that's what Ford tell us. Asked if they had a 5W-40 - answer 'no'.

Went to VW instead - helpful chap asked for engine number, but it wasn't in my manual. Then he said, well all the 115PD engines take this oil - 5W-40 and got a 1L bottle of the right stuff out... price

Very entertaining story. To be safe, I really would recommend just sticking to the Ford or VW product designed for this engine, which is a semi-synthetic 5W40, or the Millers XFE-PD, also designed for this engine.

Of course, the real fun and games will come when you take the vehicle in for its first service. Even if you take it to a Ford dealer, when you give it to the service dept, they'll almost certainly put their one-size-fits-all rubbish in it when they change the oil, which probably doesn't meet VW505.01. If you really love your engine you'll go round to the parts dept, get a 5-litre can of Ford SD 5W40, and insist they use that oil when they do the oil change instead of their own stuff. You should also insist they return to you the 1 litre that should be left in the can if they have filled the sump to its correct capacity. Who knows, this may even discourage them from over-filling the sump, though I wouldn't bank on it.

Your first photo shows clearly the words "made in Germany", so I wonder who makes this stuff?

(assuming that made in Germany doesn't refer only to the container)

May be of interest... Halfords reply to my question about their (incorrect) advice...

Thank you for your email regarding the above subject. Here is a reply from our Product Manager.

A new oil customer catalogue (CRL) is due in store from 30th January and has many amendments including this one.

The Galaxy 115 PD Tdi is a VW engine and needs a specific oil to VW spec 505.01 and Ford spec FRD M2C 917A.

We list Castrol 505.01 in the new catalogue but it is unfortunately only available as a special order. Previously it has only been available in Germany as a 1 litre.  In the Uk it has only been supplied direct to garage workshops until now.

Obviously if the demand is there we will ask Castrol to supply in 1 and 4 litre sizes and put it on sale in all stores.

The VW/Audis/Seat/Skodas with this engine are generally on "variable servicing " intervals and need Castrol SLX 11 which we stock.  It is only when they are on fixed servicing that VW505.01 is recommended.

If you wish to buy this oil from us it can be ordered by asking the store to place a special order with Castrol retail price

Ouch! Not that Halfords are noted for being cheap mind you, but to be undercut by VW main dealer spares prices, well......

In France, Bricomarche do a VW506.01 that sells for EUR40per 4.5 L, which is far cheaper than in the UK.....

It is made by Total.

Next time....

SA Intruder, is the 506 a typo - should it be 505? If not a typo, will 506 also do?

Just asking, as I'm off to France this summer, so will pick up some of this oil.

While firkling through the cans of oil at Halfords, I'm fairly sure that I saw a warning on the back of the fully-synth long-life Castrol (VW 506.01?) saying that it shouldn't go in engines requiring VW505.01.

Hummm...

See my earlier posting somewhere else ref Castrol's tech helpline. 506.01 should not be used in early 115ps engines. There is a cut-off point after which it is safe to use it (due to engineering changes within the engine) but it's a waste to do so!

506.01 is only for increased drain intervals; 505.01 is perfectly adequate for the 115ps engine, and can be used on the latest engines calling for 506.01 IF YOU STICK to fixed changed intervals of max 1 year or 10,000 miles.
