Timing Belt Or Chain

after only owning our 1999 gal 2.3 manual for 3 weeks and not knowing much about the service history thought it would be a good idea to have the timing belt changed.went to our local garage and after the mechianc inspecting the engine he said there was not a belt but a timing chain.can any one please confirm this
