galaxy-one Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 Hello Does anyone know if the auto gear lever (in a Mk1 galaxy) should have a light (to show the gear letters in the dark)? If it does do you know how to replace the light bulb (step-by-step instructions would be grately appreciated)? Many thanks Quote
NikpV Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 AFAIK it should have but have never needed to replace even on my mk2 Quote
insider Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Does the lamp in the ashtray work? If not, it can be accessed by simply pulling the ashtray out. This might also light the gear selector. If not, you'll have to remove the trim around the gear selector. First remove the bolt in the LH side towards the top of the selector and pull off the trim around the selector lever. Then unclip the shield at the base of the lever. I guess the lamp would be somewhere behind there. Quote
Steve S. Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Hi, This procedure has cropped up before in a post originally started by italiastar on sept 6 2005. I've tried the "search" but I can't get to it. The post's title was......Auto "gearstick" Light....in the Tech. section. I eventually got there by searching italiastar and found it 3rd post down. Perhaps one of our computer literate members can link it directly for you? Regards, Steve S. Quote

caiss4 Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Yet another one of those annoying faults with the Gal! I, too, have the failed auto selector light syndrome and when I first saw galaxy-one's post I was going to reply but then I realised I couldn't offer a solution. I had to dismantle the selector lever some months ago to adjust the inhibitor switch (the button on the lever would not depress) and in doing so looked at the light assembly and decided it just didn't look simple enough to worry about changing. After having read the previous e-mail thread by gregers I think my decision was justified! Ultimately you know where you are in the gearbox whether it's day or night; you can't move from P to R without your foot on the brake, R to N is not a problem and R to D requires the foot on the brake again. So if you're driving along and you're not sure whether you're in D (as opposed to 3 or 2 or even 1!??) just push the selector forward without depressing the button - you must be in D! Quote
NikpV Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Ultimately you know where you are in the gearbox whether it's day or night; bottom row of the computer display tells you anyway - maybe version specific though Quote
big_kev Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 just push the selector forward without depressing the button - you must be in D! Or Neutral ? Quote
