Electrics Problem

I have a 2000 V reg Ka collection.

Yesterday morning just as I was going out to work, I started my engine and my passenger side door handle was going in and out like mad! My radio sound completey went (but the radio is still working!) My electric windows dont work(neither do the lights on the buttons) and the button to release the boot from the inside doesnt work either! Ive just gone out and bought some new fuses to check if they have gone- doing that tomorrow. I couldnt get anybody to come and look at it today, everywheres booked up etc. Any ideas what this could be? We had a terrific hailstorm here on wednesday night- could water have seeped through into the wiring? If so is that a big job? Ive got the ka booked into an autoelecrician on thursday, but Im concerned these problems could be a hazard? Am I safe to drive till thursday? I will probably to around 100 miles up till then to get to and from work. Any advise would be great :-)

The usual offering for wierd electric problems....

Make sure you have the radio code, then disconnect the battery. Wait for 10 minutes then re-connect it and drive the car for at least 15 minutes so that any engine manageemnt functions shich have to be "re-learnt" are re-learnt!

Did you find any fuses blown? Did the door stop locking and unlocking when you got out of the car and tried to lock it?

(edited later)

Just re-read your post - maybe a wire is broken or two are shorted in the loom between door and "A"-post (below the windscreen pillar, where your door hinges are fitted). Does the rubber-covered tubing look damaged or OK?

Thanks for your help :-) I know im not alone with these silly problems! Not tried the fuses yet, but will do this afternoon, hopefully I will be able to sort it without taking it to the garage on thursday!

Right..... I changed all the fuses the problems could be connected to...

The electric windows now fully work  The central locking started working, but the fuse blew again, tried another and the same happend. Still same problem with radio- it will turn on, B) has sound for a bit- then the right speaker crackles and the sound stops- but the radio is STILL on.

I couldnt get to to the fuse for the button to open the boot- couldnt find it B) Its on the same board as the relays, which I presume must be behind the first fuse box? Im going to leave that to a person who knows more than I do!

Undo the looms on both doors(twist anti-clockwise)where it goes into the car pillars & look at the bottom of the plugs for green corrosion. Also pull back the rubber( )& look for broken wires as this is very common.Dealership can replace the corroded terminals but often just renew the door loom(s)complete. If you leave it too long the corrosion will spread to the female plugs(in the pillars)& you dont want this as it's a complete one-piece vehicle loom!

From memory boot release is from fuse 6(bottom row)which also powers radio, lights on buzzer & clock so doubt if thats your problem, more likely to be tailgate hinge pins corroded,is heater rear window & rear wiper ok?

I recommend you take it to Ford if it needs new door looms as there is TSB on door panel clips(requires extra clip to be fitted)either that or there will be a big ugly gap at the top of the interior door panel when it's refitted & the interior grab handle breaks easily when removing,so inspect them very carefully & complain if not right.

Another problem!

Couldn't get out of drivers side tonight! Had to get out through passenger door! My central locking wasnt working at all, so could this actually be the lock jammed? I can turn the key in the lock but nothing happens! This is driving me crazy! I cant wait until thursday so it can get looked at!

As with regards to Ianock, yes the back windscreen wiper is working fine, and the windsrcreen clearer. The fuse for the button to open the boot has a whole fuse of its own, but I cant get to it as its behind the 1st fuse box- I dont want to go messing in there, im not skilled enough

Radio worked all the way to work today- wasnt on very loud though. I put it on tonight though and the sound just crackled and died.

I just hope the other door doesnt lock on me tomorrow so I can get in and out of the ka!

It was the door looms as mentioned in previous posts

Glad you got it sorted, and at not too great a cost either.

Wishing you many miles of trouble-free motoring.
