Hi i have a 2003 tdi galaxy that has done 59k and everytime i go round a left hand bend i get a knocking noise, this doesnt effect drive but is getting louder. when i have jacked the car up and spinned the wheels the nosie is constant, is this a diff problem or the drive shafts ( there is a bit of play in them) i have been looking at other threads and they seem to cause this sort of problem.

i have spoken to two garages who claim it needs a new gearbox which seems over the top as the box seems to work fine.

advise is welcomed as to what action to take or what it maybe

regards

Sounds like classic knackered CV joint symptoms. They can be a little "iffy" on TDi's I think the petrols use different driveshafts (correct me if im wrong!)

Replacing them is straight forward for a competent DIY'er, is the noise coming from one side of the car?

Hi,

Here is a simple test to find out what is kaput.

Find a large open area (supermarket car park after its closed).

Wind down both front windows.

Put your Galaxy onto full left hand lock and accelerate hard in first gear in a full circle.

Do you hear any clicking or knocking if yes either outer cv joint is kaput.

Put Galaxy on full right hand lock and accelerate hard in first gear in a full circle

Do you hear any clicking or knocking if yes either outer cv joint is kaput.

If no to the above then find a roundabout and again with windows down drive round (any rumble now could indicate wheel bearing failure), bit more awkward to check the right hand wheel bearing but find a long tight left hand bend.

If no to all above it could be rather more expensive!

I once had a wheel bearing give way on me as I went round a roundabout and it gave such a loud bang followed by heavy knocking vibration I thought the wheel was coming off.

Hope this helps

I took the car back to the garage and they have replaced the middle bit of the drive shaft ???? (cant remember what it is called) i have driven round the block and it seem to have cured the problem.

the garage sorted it out for free even though the car was out of warrenty!!!!

there are a few good guys out there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice guys
