Hi all. Anyone have experience of a seized gear selector?

Read the posts here and as far as I can see all the ball joints appear to be in place and the cables still attached to their brackets.

Have no movement at all on the selector cable. What could cause this?

I just don

I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of months back, on my way home from work. Had the indignity of having to pull off in third at every junction and set of lights...lol. Cost me just short of

Thanks for the replys.

Familyman, yes it's a deisel and yes the cables are attached (both ends) and are seated on the brackets correctly. I was hoping it may have been a ball joint or off the bracket for a quick fix - no such luck. The one at the back (selector) is seized, can't get it to budge at all. Can't see why.

Adema, what work was carried out for

Just had similar problem on mine . You can get the selector stack out from above if you remove all the cowlings around expansion tank, fuel filter bracket, and battery tray. Supprt transmission from below with a jack as the gearbox mount is held on with four 16mm bolts through the tray. There are 6 or 7 10mm bolts holding the stack which are difficult to get to but with a small spanner and a 1/4 inch drive sockket and extensions it is possible. the stack will lift out once you have disconnected reversve light switch and selector cables which will pop off.

Mine turned out to be the pinch bolt at the bottom of stack. which meant a gearbox out job , Hope this helps Ian

Thanks Ian. I'm thinking my issue is likely to be as yours was. However my car has done 254,000 miles (original clutch and exhaust) and removal of the gearbox sounds very expensive. This could only be justified if I took the opportunity to have the clutch renewed. I'm assuming that the gearbox has to come out to do a clutch? If so then to have a selector assembly installed during the same job would make more sense. I'm going to get some quotes from Ford and from a private mechanic and compare to the value of the car. Else it's new car time.

The selector stack should not be worn , new ones are not cheap but a new pinch bolt is only pennies, the problem is getting the old one out,I was quoted 450 + vat at a gearbox specialist, but opted to remove box myself and it cost me 100 to get it split and bolt removed . Modified bolt fitted and should not happen again. apparently this is a common fault.

I can't find the pinch bolt on my TIS disk. Do you have any info/diagrams? What is the deal with the 'modified' bolt? Cheers.

Just found the bolt on myTIS disc. The modded one apparently has a slightly triangular section to cut in a bit and grip better, also some loctite is recommended.I can't seem to upload pics but if you pm me your email address i will forward them. The bolt i a 7mm metric fine thread.

OH it appears I have uploaded pics. the bolt is the one one second image arrowed 1. HOPE THIS HELPS

Fantastic Ian, thanks. I've got it in with the loacl spanner man. I'll send him the info so he knows what to look for. Top Man!

Just remember the old bolt will be in the bottom of the gearbox and must come out.{ unless it has punched a hole in casing}. I replaced clutch slave and bearing while box was out

If the old bolt is in the gearbox, how is it that I'm still able to drive the car? Must have done 40 miles in it since the fault happened?

I had some quotes from Ford dealer - new gear selector mechanism

When mine went I coul not get any gears so it maybe another problem. But if the bolt is only half out it could cause selection problems for certain gears. If it falls out completely and into the box at speed its bye bye box and hello to a very large bill, luckily I was crawling when mine went.

I would spend an hour taking the stack out and hope the bolt is half out, before putting it in a garage,

Ok here's what went wrong. Others here have had the same cause - corrosion around the top of the selector shaft. Mechanic removed the selector assembly, removed the shaft, cleaned and re-greased it. Fixed! Here

Hi all,

Why is it, thst when you join a forum for one fault, you end up with another?

Just had my gearbox go - only able to select 3rd and 4th. There is swarf in the transmission oil, so suspect box dead, but will try to get the stack put on my next day off.

Thanks for all the info on the forum.

Thanks

Mark
