I have a '02 2.3 with 60k miles and one garage says it has a cambelt which now needs changing and the other says it has a timing chain so no need to worry.

So which is it?!!

Chains are usually designed for the life of the engine, but should it get noisy, it should be replaced together with the tensioner components. If the sprockets are also worn, it would be a good idea to replace these as well. Failing to change a noisy cam chain could well lead to it defining the life of the engine.

They are pulling a fast one, it has a chain which is good for several hundred thousand miles, unless faulty. Edited by jkspoff

Ok, so it's a chain. Good, phew. Thanks for the replies.

Interestingly it's the local garage on the corner who say its a chain and the local Ford specialist who says it's a cambelt.

No prizes for guessing who is doing the service.

Well.................I've read a claim on here of 380,000 miles on one chain and still going strong !

thats good going but I know these engines of old and I wouldn't want to go much past 150K with the same chain guides
