Off To Devon On Saturday

satnav wants to go via the motorways but we cant get into the cottage until 3pm but dont want to laeve too late. AsBo andrew is only 20 months old so 3/4 stops for walkies/food needed.

 

How about this route - local knowledge would be welcome

 

A1 to huntingdon

A14 to thrapston

A45 to Northampton

A43 to M40 (one junction only)

A34 to andover/popham

A303 to exeter

A30 to Okehampton

 

will be starting out at about 6.30 and planning breakfast nr oxford, a morning walk nr salisbury, picnic nr yeovil

 

any thoughts ......

yeah can i come too :wacko: ,love that part of the world but cant really give advice coz everytime ive gone down that neck of the woods ive either got there too early or been stuck in a huge jam for hours specially going down to cornwall,but have agood hoilday anyways ;)

Sounds like a good plan to me - Traffic should be Ok as the weather has put most people off travelling!.

 

A303 is a good route - Check the A34 as theres been some serious roadworks south of the M4.

For your morning walk try Old Sarum castle on the Amesbury road out of Sailisbury, wonderful views and free parking for as long as you want.

 

If you look in the pics thread the one of the cathedral spire under a wooden bridge was taken there.

thanks for the thoughts and advice, I've checked the A34 in oxfordshire and there are some roadworks but will probably still risk it -some single lane working ummmm..

 

Cheers Neil I did suggest Old Sarum to SWMBO (love it myself but not been for 20yrs) but she is looking for somewhere that Asbo Andrew can charge around and If IIRC ditch and ramparts are a bit steep :ph34r:

The A303 is very iffy at best you could be stuck in traffic for ages.

 

Have your breakfast at Gloucester and picnic nearer to Exeter.

wish I had, the only delays were on the 303 - although on the way we did stop at old sarum for a walk and had lunch further on at 'alfreds tower' both close to the A3

great week though - weather was glorious but I'm exhausted. was pleased with the way the Gal handled the hills I don't think the autobox has ever had so much manual shifting to from D ;)
