Ivor Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 My Alhambra has started accelerating strangely. It doesn't go to well, picks up, slows, has another go, then slows again, but not all the time. Are these MAF symptoms? I just whipped my MAF out , it's never been replaced in 7 years, the date code on it is 04/00 (First registered July 2000).Now it doesn't accelerate well at all (with it disconnected) but it IS smoother, and I'm unsure if I can still feel the unwillingness to accelerate (maybe, just slightly). Is 7 years for a MAF it then, should I buy another? Quote
mumof4 Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 lasts around 50 odd k miles judging by what peeps milaege is wen it goes. Quote

Bigjeeze Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 My Mk1 has done 139K - original MAF - No problems My MK2 has done 118K - again original MAF no issues - There doesn't seem to be a stadard life for these things - they seem to vary a lot. Quote

seatkid Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 (edited) My first 96 Alhambra Tdi, fitted with the 1Z 90ps engine had an alloy bodied MAF - not sure if it was Bosch or Pierburg - it may have been hot wire. My present 98 has the AHU 90ps engine and AFAIK all diesel models Mk1 and 2 after 98 have plastic bodied Bosch MAFs fitted with hot film hybrid IC sensors. The exact sensor varies with the engine model though. Remember that "Bosch" does not mean "made in Germany". A lot of MAFs have been made in China I believe, my Bosch glowplugs were made in France and I've seen "Made in Hungary" stamped on a number of electrical items. Bosch and VW had a lot of quality control issues on electrical items in the late 90's. I remember particularly the saga of coil packs made in South Africa (and no longer made there AFAIK) Edited July 24, 2007 by seatkid Quote
Bigjeeze Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Not sure Nick - As they are working fine I haven't touched them! They are both plastic rather than metal. Quote
Ivor Posted July 28, 2007 Author Report Posted July 28, 2007 (edited) Well, it was definitely the MAF, I just fitted a new one and I can't believe the difference. It must have been slowly degrading over time. Symptoms were:General lack of power "I'm sure it was better than that before" feeling.Slightly hesitant acceleration. The new one cost me Edited July 28, 2007 by Ivor Quote
