Hi Can anyone please help....

I have a 2001 1.9 Galaxy MK2. On startup there is a hammering sound, like hammer hitting metal twice, starts up fine, then..... The whole care is shaking.

I have had the cambelt changed so 100% not the cambelt, now.....

I took the car for MOT today it failed on emmissions and corrosion on the back exhaust,...

upon inspection the back exhaust is actually rocking side to side detached from the rest of the exhaust system due to rust, my question is this......

is it possible that the backbox not being attached could have caused all the problems i am having?

Please let me know ASAP.

I reckon it's quite possible. If the exhaust is not working correcly it will almost certainly be failing on emissions, especially if it's affecting the cat. If the lambda sensor in the cat isn't recieving the correct signals (i.e. incorrect emissions) it can send wrong info to the egine and cause rough running. The exhaust being loose and coupled with the rough running could be your 'hammering' noise.

Thanks so much Mike for the fast response,

The whole car shakes looking at the engine its shaking quite badly, does the exhaust really have that much of an effect on performance, sorry for my ignorance, what does the back part of the exhaust really do?

The car has been running rough for almost a year now, but has now got really bad, hence my thinking its the cambelt initially and getting it replaced.

failure of the bolt at the gearbox end of the roll restrictor ?? do a search there is a piccy somewhere not uncommon, side effect may be damage to air con pipe work as engine rolls under load - can you rock the engine ??

coincidence ??

Hi NikpV,

Thank you, I've searched for a pic do you know the address of one please I can't seem to find it :D , is it something easy to replace?

I look forward to your reply and many thanks again.

I did nip to ford today, and they seemed to think it was the flywheel quoted

Neither the exhaust nor the flywheel would cause a diesel to fail its emissions test.

Having said that, it is possible that because the rear box is detached, the flow of exhaust through it would be nuch lower than it should, and be causing the test equipment not to record the actual emissions from the engine properly.

As regards the vibration, I doubt if it's the roll restrictor, as this only tends to cause problems when taking up drive.

However, it could just possibly be the offside engine mounting, as this has to be removed when changing the cambelt - if this has come loose or bolts fallen out, I would expect a fair bit of noise and vibration.

By the way, is the vibration more like a misfire, or is it more 'mechanical'?

One more thing that has just occurred to me - could the cambelt have been fitted one tooth out? Another possibility is that the cambelt tensioner was not correctly adjusted and has allowed the cambelt to jump a tooth or two. This could also cause an emissions test failure. Your garage would certainly not like to admit to this though, so it may be better to get a second opinion.

Thanks Tim,

This is the 2nd cambelt change for 8 months, the first time the garage didn't change the tensioner, looking under the coverer i noticed a peice missing from the tensioner where the hex key goes in, so i took it to a diff garage who fitted new belt and tensioner. This I think eliminates the cambelt.

The engine shakes on the cambelt side up and down consistently, when the cambelt was replaced all the bolts were tightened correctly. So unless something is missing the engine should be correctly mounted.

As I mentioned the local fraud dealer seems adiment its the wearing of the flywheel which is

Have just had a thought, before i bought the car it had been in an accident, i know oit had major work done on it late 2004.

is it possible that the parts used by ford in that period could be under the recall?

I checked my car its a MKII 2001 model so the recall doesn't apply, i even called ford and asked them to check.

just had a similar issue with mine when it starts does the bang come from the front,if so you are getting blowout through the air box

is the engine running really lumpy(when you sit in it it sounds like a tractor,if so its the ignition coil.

90 + vat and mine is now purring like a tiger

It was the flywheel, the car ran like a dream after changing. But now 1 year on I am having the following problems:

- No heat from heater

- Overheating in high speed

- White smoke when i start the car from the middle of the car

- Very rough running, but once the car warms up I can turn off then on and sometimes it runs fine no sluggishness!
