We want to escape the horrendous British summer we are having, the worst I can remember for a long long time, for the summery shores of somewhere else in Europe. The only problem is we have to take holidays just like many other people at school term end, this means significantly hiked up prices on all flights. We are severely penalised for having children school age, for example, Jet2, ThomsonFly, EasyJet etc are offering flights a third the price the week before the hols.

They shouldn't be aloud to do this, and should just be a first come first served standard price. I would be happy to pay slightly higher prices all year round and have the same prices in peak season. To get 4 of us out in October half term would still be nearly

I booked our holiday ages ago, and yes, with school-age children, we have to go during the holidays.

If I listen carefully, I can hear that my wallet is making this kind of 'ouching' sound; a kind of keening, thrilling howl. Like it's being spanked to within a microbleen of its life.

And for this, we get seats that are medically proven to cause thrombosis. I'm not even all that tall, but I can't fit in unless my knees go sideways.

Mind you, I'm sure that we're going to absolutely love Greater Manchester when we get there...

I'm sure many Scots would object to being called part of England!

Perhaps "the rest of Britain / United Kingdom" would have been more appropriate :o

Many moons ago, when I were a lad LOL.... different parts of the country had different school holidays.

When I was living in Lancashire the summer holiday started several weeks before thos in Norfolk but they also went back earlier then got a longer half term break in October.

In the 60s/70s when most peoples summer holidays were taken in this country and Britain still had a manufacturing industry, the summer holiday would normally be taken during a two week shutdown of the factory where the father worked and these were in different weeks in different parts of the country.

We definately used to have Leicester fortnight and Glasgow fortnight during the summer and the local newsagent would have the visitors "local" papers in the shop for the relevant fortnight.

Different areas of scotland have their own local holidays aswell.I know that when i lived near Peterhead which was only 3 and a half year ago, for the first 4 weeks that i was there not once did my two eldest have a full week at school because of bank holidays, local holidays, teacher training days, and any other reason they could think of!!...mind, was the best school they ever attended!!..largest class size was 15, smallest was 9...Nice place to live...right next to the sea.

People have been hanged for less.

Scotland is not part of England , remember it was our Scottish King who came down and took over both thrones....not the other way aound !

Anyhow with this labour government ( who are nearly all Scottish coincidently ) England no longer exists.

To get back to the post......

Er If I remember my history correctly - James was the Son of Darnley and Mary Queen of Scots - Darnley was an Englishman - but as for the rest - you're absolutely right!!
