Autoroute Toll Question

Hi,

I am taking the Galaxy with our trailer tent over to Normandy next month, and am wondering if anyone knows whether the autoroute tolls are increased if you are towing a trailer or not.

Trailer is 1.3m high and 4m long if size makes a difference.

Anyone help?

Depends upon the Autoroute Group Operator.

 

Sometimes I get charged Group1 and usually Group2.

 

Autoroute cost is not my main worry when towing abroad

 

Having a problems with the car or caravan whilst travelling abroad makes the slight increase in cost for the caravan pale into insignificance.

 

Autoroutes/Motorways are always safer when towing if you try to keep up with the commercial HGV vehicles over 7.5Tonnes and avoid high Speed tall sided Vans like Renault Traffic and Ivecos.

 

The suction they create if they pass at high speed can be felt and seen in the side movement of the caravan.

 

If you have to overtake on 3 lane motorways ALWAYS look out for a tall van coming down in the 3rd lane.

 

I often wait for them to pass, remaining in the middle lane, before I start the passing manouvre.

With the torque of the 1.9TDi galaxy the passing is quick.

 

My speed is usually about 60mph (upto 65/67). I can usually average 50+mph and about 29mpg if I follow a slightly faster HGV which romp up the inclines when they are emtpy at about 60mph

 

I find Car transporters are a nightmare.

Have looked in Michelin Tarif de peages and says caravans and trailers (excluding baggage trailers) so you might be lucky in french a l'exclusion des remorques a baggages the book is Michelin 914 got mine from the peage

I definately agree with you about the car transporters. I came up behind one last Summer dropping down into Spain from the frontier at Le Perthus on the A7. My first thought was the caravan had blown a tyre as the rig became so unstable in such a short time. Naturally I slowed down and the problem went away; speeded up again and approached the car transporter and again the van started to wiggle all over the place. Did a couple more drop backs and approaches just to satisfy myself that the transporter was cause and then did a bit of a naughty and used the outside lane to get past unmolested. I assume its the passage of the air through the transporter which causes a vortex of 'dirty air' and pulls the van all over the place. :rolleyes: Andy.

Hi George,

There aren't that many autoroutes in Normandy and the A84 between Caen and Avranches is free for all vehicles. On the others you should only be Class 1 and not have to pay any extra. If you're crossing to le Havre the toll on the Pont de Normandie is about 7
