My 2001 Galaxy 1.9TDi has started to make a screeching noise from the air con compressor. The clutch does move independently but does not rotate smoothly when turned by hand. I think that it engages when set to climate control, cause this is when the screeching starts. It stops when Econ mode is selected. It was cooling up to getting the noise, but not so well as it did a few years ago. It has never had the gas checked or topped up.

My local independent garage think that the compressor (278 + VAT) should be replaced, together with the filter/ dryer (

Hi -

I had to replace the aircon compressor on my 1998 Gal a couple of years ago -for routine work I use an independent garage but for this I used the local Ford dealer. The pump compressor is @

Final update to this saga. Didn't get much response from the Membership so I can only assume that nobody has carried out this job. Went to Hall's Auto Electrical after chatting to them on the phone. Seemed to know what they were talking about. Anyway they inspected the compressor and found that the nut securing the clutch plate was missing and that the clutch plate splines had disintegrated. They tried very hard to get a replacement clutch plate but all their suppliers would only supply a complete clutch assembly which was to cost almost as much as a new compressor.

Anyway, they will replace the compressor, dryer / filter, recharge etc for a total of

However, I would recommend allowing the experts to deal with the refrigerant - it is not environmentally friendly and must be disposed of correctly - it cannot be allowed to leak to the atmosphere.

Whilst I agree this is the correct thing to do - What happens every time a car AC system leaks? There are literally millions of the things out there and probably at least 10 % are leaking or emptied out!! Whilst we shouldn't knowingly add to the problem I don't think it is as critical as some would have you believe - after all that's why we now have the R134 as it no longer contains any CFC's.

Correct, but it still contributes to Global Warming.

If and when you do release the gas to the atmosphere be careful that there are no policemen around at the time - it is a criminal offence and punishable with a max.

Thank you all for your assistance and advice. Now had it done by the professionals Hall's Auto Electrical in Swindon. (Also have a branch in Yate nr. Bristol). Very efficient and charged me for 2 1/2 hrs labour and it took them 4 hrs.

Total cost for compressor + dryer/filter + vacuum + gas re-charging
