heatshield above the cat??but surely that should be secure after they fitted the cat?..is there one there??..car is too low for me to crawl under it and i dont have any ramps...but what i did see under the car didnt impress me as there is one heck of a lot of rust.I need to strip all that rust off and spray it with something to stop it going worse.I have i would say about a couple of months to get this car sorted out before i go off line any help would be appreciated.

That rules out the dying cat then (no need for a vet then!!! :angry2: sorry it's early morning)

As seatkid said it could be the heatshield or I've just checked the haynes manual and the front pipe it secured by two sring bolts one of these might be loose.

As for the rust the best thing to do is jack up the car preferable with all 4 wheels of the ground put a pair of rubber gloves on, lay under the car and get stripping with a wire brush and then slap on a thick layer of waxoyl underseal which should kill the rust and protect it from future rust.

If you have any big patches of rust before applying the waxoyl first gentle prod them with a screwdriver if the screwdriver does not go through you will be ok if it does then you have a problem, you will need a welding torch. BUT the good news is I don't think you will find any horror stories because if she had an MOT in may they would of found them then and she would not have passed the MOT.

Umm...how am i going to get all 4 wheels off the ground??daft question i know but i dont have any ramps etc.....guess i will send the kids hunting for bricks :P

Can i put that waxoyl stuff anywhere i find rust underneath?

I will jack the car up today and have a look under the car and see if it is the heat shield or anything else loose.

Thanks for the help. :angry2:

I would tend to agree with Simply_Graham regarding the idle control valve sticking as most single point injection systems on the Vauxhall suffer from the same problem ...also sticky EGR valves are notorious and in fact the cars are known to run much better without them and still pass the emissions test.
Posted
would that cause the noise that i hear?as after redoing the the silver heat shield thingy above the end of the exhaust at the rear of the car..it was still there last night when i took the kids out.

Wait a mo Mum ........ mmmmm ...rough running at idle ......rattling ?? Chromedome could be right here with getting the ignition timing checked as if it was out it could cause ignition knock or "pinking" which sounds very much like a rattle particularly when the engine is under load ...ie when you stick your foot down. What do reckon gents?

Take it to kwikfit, ask them to have a look, they will lift the car and look with the engine running.

In my experience they are very helpful and minor repairs are usually FOC.

In any case you can always say I need to think about it......

I think its a good possibility that the rattle is an exhaust related problem. As I tried to say earlier, things like heat shields can become loose on old cars due to rust. Maybe the exhaust is hitting the bodywork.

But if you prefer to crawl under your car........ :P

i checked the exhaust its not hitting the bodywork..the noise is most def coming from the cat area..but since ive had the car raised i cant duplicate the noise!

Which suggests the exhaust is hitting the bodywork. On your pics the downpipe looks close..... Only way to check is to get the car on a ramp, running and swing about on various parts of the cars exhaust and jiggle those heatshields. Someting the kwikfit guys will do glady....for free!

You don't have to DIY all the time.... :angry2:

Ok, will take it to kwikfit and see what they say

umm...which one is the downpipe?????

I DIY because lack o the purple stuff says i have to. :P

right.

Couldnt make it to kwikfit as i didnt want to risk the car in a nice big puddle that is on the way to sleaford.so i popped into the local garage up the road which has a fairly good rep.

He listened to the car and revved it and came up with this lovely lot

Manifold

Baffle plate

or a bracket but more than likely a bracket.

If it is the manifold..on my car..its not worth doing as would cost more than the car to sort out.

It has got a new front pipe on it..told him it was a new cat.He does think more than likely a bracket.Otherwise he said she sounds fine!

he did say to just take it back to the place where i got it from and tell them, if it is anything to do with the cat then i shouldnt have to pay as it should have a parts warrenty on it.Not that the place where i got it from told me that.

Before sending you the manual I had a quick look in the exhaust section and I beleive there is only a manifold bracket on the 1.8 and 2.0lt DOHC models and I doubt it's the manifold thats gone, when manifolds fail they make a worse noise than a rattle and you lose power.

I tend to agree with seatkid it looks like the down pipe it hitting the cross member (the big bar that runs across the car left to right above the cat), if you look at the second picture down (620.81k picture size) you can clearly see on the cross member above the cat, markings where something been hitting it. Take it back to the garage where the cat was fitted and get them to adjust it, if it was done in May you are still covered by trading standards law....

The sales of goods act 1979 (as ammended by the sales & supply of goods act 1994 and the sale & supply of goods to consumers Regulations 2002).

Basicly what this means is that the garage who sold you the downpipe/cat should ensure it's of satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose and as described. If it is the exhaust that is rattling the fitting in definatly not satisfactory quality and it's definatly not fit for the purpose so you are legally entitled to ask for a repair or replacement free of charge. If the garage tells you "sorry madam it over 4 weeks can't do anything" anserw back saying "The sales of goods act 1979 etc etc gives me resonable time I want a repair / replacement which is my rights NOW" consumer law's definition of reasonble time in asking for repair or replacement is upto 6 months so you have till November.

Isnt that white thing in the second pic down a flexable join thingy??

isnt this the cat??

anychance you can point out in the pic you mentioned, where the markings are that you are talking about?

Is this the bar you mean??

Yes mo4, I think they mean this bit in front of the flexible.

It's worth checking the clearance between the pipe and the cross member, there's definitely something going on there.

You could also have a problem like this if an engine mounting or roll restrictor failed, causing the engine to rock under load, making the pipe touch the cross member - you would probably feel the rattling and engine vibration through the car body.

Hope you get it sorted!

It has got a new front pipe on it..told him it was a new cat.

You're right - according to the exhaust catalogue, the front pipe and cat are one piece. That's some front pipe!

well the car does vibrate when on idle..thought that was normal. This is the first petrol car ive ever driven so i aint got a clue what is/is not normal for it.

How much clearance should there be??

Ill jack the car up today once the drive drains and ive cleared my garage of water.will have a gander.

Get the wetsuit and snorkle out!

I'm not that familiar with the Vec, but I would have thought you should be able to get your hand behind it - it will move about a bit on the flexy.

Right, just enlarged and cropped the pic to see what you mean..these marks??

post-3737-1185095141.jpg

Yes, there definitely looks like there's been some interference there, although it does look like there's a good clearance... When you can get under, it might be worth seeing just how rigid it is. Can you force the pipe up to the cross member, it should be pretty hard to move.

Could that big black bit,be forced down onto the pipe in any way??..I need to find something to put the front wheels on as i only have the little jack for the car and that sorta fell over the other day when i had it jacked up.

if i can get in closer to it, will take sum pics of whatever i try.

Thanks sparky for the help this morning.
