Just instruct S&D to fix the problems and see if they go away. You may have to reboot and rerun S&D

Remember to update S&D to the latest definitions.

the little pc to pc icon in the task bar always shows 7.6mbps..no matter how slow it is on loading a page

funny that mine says 12.0 mps but the results below prove it dont.

Your connection is MAX ADSL. See this explanation.

It will vary in speed until it determines the correct speed for your line - up to 10 days! During this training period you may experience poor internet performance!

But isn't that when its first set up??i know for the first week or so after it became active the speed was all over the place, but this is 4 months later so shouldnt it already have determined the correct speed for my line which i am presumeing is 7.6mbps, as that is the highest it goes.?

the 7.6 is the sync speed - the maximum transfer will probably about 7ish, somewhere there is a set of profiles which tell you the max transfer rate for all sync speeds

well my speed is showing as 7.6.But it is taking about 10 seconds to load a page!..even then im having to refresh to get it to load when it freezes.

this afternoon, all my connection has done is disconnect as soon as it connects..the reason..no dial tone..or the remote computer did not respond/in time.i rang tiscali..they told me it was noise on the line and to ring BT..so i rang BT and they did a line check and they said the line was fine and that i had to call my internet provider..sooo i rang tiscali again was on hold for about 10 mins and in that 10 mins it connected and disconnected as soon as it connected!..Tiscali still insist that it is a line problem and to get back in touch with BT!!my connection has disconnected 4 times so far whilst writing this reply..and my speed still says 7.6.

Does your phone line sound OK?

Do you have any crackles?

When did it start - during all the rain last week - has water got in somewhere?

Are you connected to the master socket? Can you unscrew the master socket and plug into the socket that the master plugs into?

Sorry - but they're things you can check yourself. I had a duff master socket that BT replaced

For starters the Speedtouch is a piece of crap ( sorry to disagree with SeatKid but it is ). get a half decent router and bin it.

Also the 7.6mbps is actually 8Mbps ( the usual advertising lies ) remember a Kilobit is actually 1024 bits, a megabit is 1024 kilobits and therefore 7.6 x 1024 x 1024 equals @ 8,000,000 bits. near enough as dammit, I doubt your USB can handle this anyway.....ignore what it is misleading and does not indicate the status of your connection.

The Speedtouch has a USB 1.1 connection max 12Mbit/s......if you have no other USB equipment on the same internal USB highway....most likely you haveand they will fight for this bandwidth.

Also it is line powered from the USB hub......NOT THE USB SKT.....several sockets will be one the same bus..and therefore as it draws the maximum power available from the hub, anything else on the hub will have to fight for the power, almost certainly one of them will lose if not both.

If you insist on keeping this modem then make sure that you have no other USB equipment connected and cross your fingers and hope to die....sorry got carried away again.

In brief avoid all USB adsl modems and use a tried and tested network connection to a seperate adsl Router........much more reliable connection and nearly all provide a hardware firewall as well.

ummm..the only thing i have usb in this house is my pc where the cable for the speedtouch plugs into...you lost me on most of what you said.......the only other thing i have pluggedinto the filter is my phone.Cant even blame sky as that is not connected to the phone line.

my camera and pda plug into my pc via usb cable..

i need things in english as i am very pc illiterate.

my phone line is crap..could that be the prob??it crackles...when i mentioned it to bt they said there was nowt wrong with it.

Say what you will, but the immediate problem here is not the modem but MO4's telephone line. Bet the problem started with all this rain.

MO4 why not ring 151 and select the report fault option, there is an option to do a line test. Try it when the problems are bad.

The Speedtouch 330 I used for many a year was as solid as a rock and fast.....USB 1.1 will handle 8Mbps.....I doubt MO4 has anything else on this port.

(I do have a Netgear router nowadays for the kids......)

But MO4.....If you want a 100% solution...... :(

1. Befriend a computer geek ;)

2. Bin your computer and buy a new one.

3. Buy an expensive ADSL modem router - the more expensive the better  :)

4. Move house :(

5. Repeat above procedure until the problem is fixed

;) :D

Are you sure it is the line crackling and not the phone ?

I assume you have tried another phone and it is the same ?

If it is the line then phone BT up from a different line or mobile and report your home line as dead.

Remember to unplug your phones so they can't phone you back to test this.....

Eventually they wil have to send an engineer out to test the line who will plug his phone in hear it crackling and fix the fault.

It is most likely that water has gotten onto a joint somewhere with the recent rain that everyone has had.....apart from here in the East Midlands where the sun has shone consistently since May.

Alternatively if your line is ok......change your phone whilst walking past the bin with your modem.

A.Can't afford one. This one ive had for 6 years.

A.See answer above.

4. Move house

A.I will very soon have no choice but to leave this house as i am being evicted since he has left and commenced divorce proceedings.

5. Repeat above procedure until the problem is fixed

A.Ummm.....nice idea but not very practical, for the last 33 years i have moved roughly every 2 years.Time i settled down.

:) :D

Bigkev.......i did buy a new phone, and the line still crackles.

touch wood..the connection hasnt dropped once this eve.

I really do appreciate all the help you all are giving me.

I am currently trying to figure out how to use my PDA wirelessly, just bought a wireless router and trying to figure out what else i need.As very soon i will be off line for a few months

Thanks SK  ....im going to hound BT tomorrow till they get this sorted.Sometimes i can't even hear the other person im speaking to because of the crackling on the line.
Posted

Hound the hell out of them.

Insist the line is dead, they won't bother otherwise....if the find out it isn't just tell them that the fault is intermittant.

Don't take no for an answer, give them the usual story about your great auntie Doris being on her death bed and you are in a rubbish mobile area....blah de balh de blah.

The line test option is pretty rubbish and very rarely detects a crackly line

p.s. just check your telephone sockets in the house are not wet !

Sometimes water can come in down the cable and through the hole into the socket.

I assume that you tried the phone direct into a socket and not via any extension cable or similar.

p.p.s. is your wireless router an asdl one....could replace that USB......

p.p.p.s. I will just dial into the your BT exchange and see which other operators have equipment there.

Back in a mo.

Posted (edited)

Nope none of the other operators have a prescence there.......youre way out in the sticks on a little system x concentrator.....more of a large brick hut rather than a telephone exchange.

Don't have a floor plan for this one so can't see if any space is reserved for other operators coming in soon.

Its a BT line required whoever you go with.

Give the engineer the Big Sad eyes look, used to work all the time for me...

Ok, thanks for that.I will hound bt tomoz till they get it sorted.

Nite.

The fact that you have a noisy line will definately be affecting your ADSL performance.

When the BT engineer turns up,

DONT ask him/her if they want a Tea or Coffee....

DO ASK what kind of biscuits they want with their Tea or Coffee.

That ALWAYS used to make me stay on site longer :o

If all else fails then an email detailing your woes to

ben dot verwaayen at bt dot com

might attract some attention.
