vwsharan Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Hi,My 03 1.9 tdi Sharan obviously knows I have joined this forum as tonight it has decided to throw yet another wobbler. I have read many threads on the problems associated with the alternator pulley and the special tools required to remove it. Tonight I became aware of the most god awful screech/rumble from under the bonnet, had a damn good idea what it was but was very suprised when I released the drive belt tension to have the alternator pulley fall off!The bearings had completely collapsed and compacted into itself, the cage showing multiple fracture marks, and had shattered. Just a note to anyone out there if you see red dust on the outside of the alternator pulley, get it changed immediately as mine ejected red dust last week and the bearing was obviously running dry and must have been getting pretty hot. I dont need the special spline tool as there is no longer any part left to spin! and i'm going to hold the spline bit in a vice but does anyone know what tool and size fits the inner drive, is it a torque or a special. Many Thanks Quote
