Hi,

I have been advised by my main VW dealer that the slight lumpy running on idle I get when my 03 sharan 1.9 TDi is showing 1/8 warm is due to grease initially coming out of the dual mass flywheel. It is then thrown off by the spinning action and stops when the engine warms up slightly more. Here are the symptoms I gave them,

start engine from cold

set off with no vibrations, judders or anything

Drive the car for about 1 mile, engine temp just beginning to register on bottom marker

Sit at traffic lights, engine temp now showing 1/8 warm, now it begins to run ever so slightly lumpy (doesn't show on rev counter), but will rev cleanly up but can feel a slight lumpy running as the revs drop betwen 1200 and idle.

Set off from lights, drive 100 yards hey presto car now running smooth as usual.

Can someone give me their opinion on the main dealer explanation of this lumpy running, not convinced!

Sharan has covered 92000 miles and once warmed up it doesnt repeat this lumpy running again.

I personally suspected either the Maf or the temp sensor but the main dealer said they were ok!

Thanks in advance for your opinion

Grease from DMF? Thats a good one, almost as good as "they all do that"!

AFAIK the DMF is just a sandwich of 2 steel plates with bonded rubber in between - no grease involved. When they go, the shakes start and you can end up with a fire! Check the recall for DMF's you may be covered for a free replacement - see this post for further information.

I think its just a dicky injector - try some injector cleaner in your fuel - that Miller stuff.....
