turk90210 Posted July 5, 2007 Report Posted July 5, 2007 seems no one else wants to break the bad news to you but yes its totally bad, caput, creamed ect, ect, ect don't want to sound off with you (cant spell sarcastic, or can I) but how do you expect us to tell you if a noise sounds bad or not eeeeerrrrrrrrrbest advice would be to get some one who knows engines to listen to it and give you his or her opinion then post back or even an idea of what area it is coming from and is it an actual tapping noise Quote
dewsy Posted July 6, 2007 Author Report Posted July 6, 2007 found out its the tappitts is it easy to fix? leigh Quote
seatkid Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 No not really, the tappets are hydraulic and and wear should be automatically taken up when the engine starts. The head has to be stripped to change them. I would be surprised if they are worn, but its not unheard of. Make sure the tapping is not "normal" before you spend Quote
mumof4 Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 yup..the PD engine sure sounds like a bag o spanners sometimes!..not that mine ever did...she just purrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeddddddddd along sweetly then when you put yer foot down...the wind noise drowned out any engine noise :P :P :P Quote
El Dingo Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 Do the VW based diesel engines have a non-return valve fitted in the oil filter? This used to be a big problem with old VW's/Audis if a cheapo oil filter was fitted that doesn't have an integrated non-return valve (basically a ball on a spring). This could be how the tappets could have worn out - without the non-return valve the oil seeps away overnight and the tappets start the day 'dry'. Quote
dewsy Posted July 6, 2007 Author Report Posted July 6, 2007 hi would the noise go away if i did a oil change and use synthetic oil it needs a service anyway Quote
