Guest TLanc Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Hello everyone out there.I'm looking to buy a used Galaxy. I've tried 3 petrol Zetecs so far, the first had high mileage, the other two were low mileage V reg's. All of them sound like a diesel for the first second or so after starting, to a greater or lesser degree. Is this normal? Thanks to anyone who replies. Quote
chromedome Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 The petrol engines have hydraulic valve adjusters, or tappets, and can "rattle" until the oil pressure builds up. They can take a few seconds before they work correctly. It is more noticable if the engine hasn't been started for some time, could be the case if the ones you have viewed have been on garage forecourts some time. With day to day use I would doubt if you would notice any sound at all, I don't with mine. If the noise persists I would look at another vehicle as it could mean the hydraulic tappets or even the camshafts need changing. Help this helps. Quote
Guest Ian Hampton Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Hello, Just to add a word of caution, I had rattley tappets and I ended up paying Quote
Danny Boy Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 I did have a 'tappet' problem with my 2.0ltr but it seems to have cured itself, dont ask me how. I was told by an independent garage that if you keep a good eye on your oil levels/quality this does help and can reduce the tappety noise you are experiencing. :( Quote
Guest trubs Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Hi all, I have a 2.0L '96 Ghia and mine also sounds like a Ford Transit, when at slow speeds, mostly in 2nd gear :) . My oil levels are normal, so I hope it is not a tappet problem, otheriwse more money spent on the car :) . Good luck with the search trubs Quote
