sparky Paul Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 (edited) re- brake pads /discs, recently changed front brake pads/discs on a ,52 plate ford galaxy, found that brake pedal became very spongy, have since changed the brake master cylinder & the brake servo, only to find that their is still travel on the brake pedal. any other suggestions on how to cure the problem with the brake pedal travel, the car still stops o.k. but their is still some travel on the brake pedal any suggestions would be much appreciated It's not unusual for there to be some movement on the pedal, but I'm guessing you have found it worse after the work was done. The obvious answer is that some air has entered the system which will need bleeding - sometimes this can be stubborn, requiring a pressure bleeder. Also, check that the pads and calipers are fitted and seated correctly, and that the pads can move okay in the calipers. Is it pulling up straight when braking hard? If not, start by looking at the weak side. Did you clamp the hose and release the fluid through the bleed nipple when forcing the pistons back in? If not, it is possible to damage the ABS pump unit, although the symptoms you describe doesn't really indicate seal damage in the pump, which is often similar to master cylinder failure. nottelmann Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 Hi Lim, Thanks very much for your details, I have to change my disc and pads soon. Just a question I have: Why do you need to loosen the 2 hex nuts under the rubber? What are they holding? Isn't it sufficient to loosen the 2 large 18 or 19 mm bolts to completely remove the caliber? Jan Hi, I finally done it, this is how:I ordered four items from ebay: Minex Brakes and discs boxset = Quote
clown Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 i can recommned you i was use a brake disk from Ferodo Premium series, for 120000 km .. , on highways, cities .. after these km discs loose only 1mm of thickness .., be carefull when you buy a too cheap brake components. they may kill you .. ;) Quote
Shabazmo Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 The hex bolts have to be removed to remove the caliper. RefMake sure hub is clean before refitting new discs. Mine had old copper grease, so I cleaned and smeared some new on (probably why my discs came off so easily). This is very important because if there is a little grit on the surface then the discs will not be true with the pads, leading to warped discs. The best solution is to use a dial test indicator to check run out. The spec is 0.1mm on the outer circumference for both front and rear. I got mine to 0.02mm at the front discs and 0.05mm at the rear discs. Best of luck Quote
JRWR Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 How do I get to see the pictures? If I click the link it says I don't have permission. I've been told I need new discs (and pads) all round on a '54 Galaxy and the quote was about Quote
gregers Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 jrwr the reason you cannot see the pics is you are restricted at the moment, until you have made 5-6 posts on the forum,it wont take long  as for the parts try looking back through this thread im sure its been posted on where others have got their stuff from iirc gsf,or your local parts company or try ford/vw/seat.to see what price difference there is. Strangely some price the discs in pairs (which of course I want!) while others price them individually .. others price them individually and then insist they be bought in pairs. I'm not sure why you're restricting the pics to people who've made a minimum number of posts. I'll hope to take some pics as I go along and I'll be doing both front and back discs and pads on a '54 1.9TDi 130PS Galaxy. It's quite a low mileage car and I wonder if the wear may be due to towing a caravan - should I be looking at uprated discs? Anyway, if I do need to make more posts then I may get to see the pics .. otherwise I'll just have to try and muddle through. JRWR Quote

I must have been promoted or something. I have to say they're great and I wil be referring to them. Now, next bit of advice sought, what do I need to buy!! So far, on my shopping list I have: Brake discs and pads (duh!) and having weighed up the comments for/against ebay I like the look of this deal: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GALAXY-1-9TDI-130HP-...A1%7C240%3A1318 That's all the pads and discs (Mintex) for Quote
harpster Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 hi allthanks to this guide, i did my discs and pads yesterday, the hardest part was the calipher mount bolts 27mm, i am glad i had a good ratchet and a 6ft weight lifting bar.i bought my discs/pads off ebay Quote
JRWR Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 I'm getting set to undertake this job (front and rear discs and pads). So far I have the discs and pads, brake hose clamp, a set of 1/2" drive hex bits, tub of copper grease and the caliper rewind tool should arrive soon - total cost to me Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Hi BE AWARE OF THE 16" WHEEL BIT!! This is very poor information on the TIS Disc. The 270Nm torque refers to the caliper/mount used on the VR6 models only. All other cars use a different caliper and a different (smaller) bolt, which should be torqued to 190Nm (140 lb-ft). It is my belief that this description was a hang up from the past, probably Mk1 vehicles, when only VR6 cars got the 16" wheels. George. Quote
mictop Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 George is correct with the 190Nm also it is good practice to add locktight to the threads before they are fitted. Mike Quote
JRWR Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 (edited) Wow, thanks to both of you for that advice! I'd have looked very silly if I'd stripped those screws! (I was planning to set my wrench at 135Nm and then find the point at which pulling on the shaft with all my might I could get it to click. I would then do the same but at twice the distance along the shaft to get the 270Nm!) This forum is proving invaluable - hope to be able to pay back with some pics and an account of how it all goes in a few weeks time. Edited April 8, 2009 by JRWR Quote
Brash Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 Hi I've just changed the front and back discs and pads on my 2004 Ford Galaxy 130ps 1.9 TDI.I used the information found on here and bought the Mintex discs and pads off e-bay for Quote
matthew_narvik Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I changed my front brake pads last week on a 2004 Sharan (16 in). The procedure was the same as previously stated, except that I had a brake wear sensor installed in the left front pad which wasn't mentioned in the other instructions. It took me a while to figure out how to disconnect the sensor. Here is the procedure.1. Unclip the end coming from the vehicle. (push in the button and pull up and off)2. Push down the small plastic tab on the bottom of the bracket coming from the plastic clip on the wire coming from the brake pad and rotate the clip 90 deg to allow it to slide out of the bracket.3. Pay attention to how the wire is routed from the brake pad to the bracket so that the new wire comes in the same place.4. Replace shoes as per other instructions.5. Slide the new clip in to the bracket and rotate 90 deg to lock in place. 6. Clip on the end coming from the vehicle. :-) Quote
a.spillane Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 New to this fantastic site and proud owner of 53 reg 1.9 TDI. Time has come to shortly replace front and rear pads and disc ! I am thinking of attempting to replace these myself with the help and guidance from these forums. Can anyone suggest a place to buy disc and pad set ??? I have seen a few on ebay, but a little concerned regarding possible quality of products. Gal used to transport young children and would not like to have brake failure !!!! Any advice for decent product and reasonable price would be great. thanks Quote

Jayton Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I'd buy from these guys:http://www.vwsonline.co.uk/car_parts_bristol/ I've done business with them for most of my Galaxy's parts and they've even given me sound advice, just remember to look under Sharan for the parts :( They're generally cheaper than GSF & ECP too :( Quote
