Danny Boy Posted June 11, 2007 Report Posted June 11, 2007 (edited) Hi all About 6 weeks ago my turbo decided to die so I got a reconditioned one fitted. Since it was fitted I have had problems with a lack of power when accelerating up to 2,000 rpm. I took it back to the garage that fitted the turbo and they claim there is a fault with the fuel pump. So i went back to my normal garage (who I do trust) and he is not brilliant with diesel engines and thinks they might be fobbing me off and suggest I get a disel mechanic to have a look and diagnose the fault. He did however notive that the fuel filter was "loose" and tightened it up. Since he done that power had increased slightly but was still not 100%. At the weekend I was driving from Brum to Chester up the A41 the lasck of pwer came back again and when pulling away from every island (there is quite a few) there was thick blue/white smoke comming form the exhaust, but once at a coasting speed of 65 ish the smoke stopped. I checked the oil levels and they were fine. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is and need some firm answers so I know what coarse of action to take. Does anyone recognise what the problem might be. Me and my mechanic think its down to the turbo but I thought I'd run it past you guys before coughing up for the diesel mechanis to have a ponder over the car! Any suggestions woould be great Cheers :-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-) Edited June 11, 2007 by Danny Boy Quote
turk90210 Posted June 11, 2007 Report Posted June 11, 2007 Hi Danny Boyfrom what you say it seems like it could be the new turbo at fault but sometimes you can get other faultsHaving said that though i would be concerned about the blue/white smoke you say you are getting. VERY CONCERNEDIts obviously hard to speculate as to the exact fault without actually seeing it but blue smoke is usually a sign of burning oil, white smoke could be water getting into the cylinders and burning offI would suggest getting it to the Diesel Specialist ASAP as if it is oil burning you could end up with a runaway. By that i mean if the seals have go in the turbo and it is allowing oil to get in you could end up with the oil being pushed back into the engine and running on this instead of the fuel and not being able to turn the engine off until either the engine blows up or the oil runs out which gives you other problems ****Please note that this is the worst case scenario and it doesn't happen very often, but better safe than sorry**** Quote

gio Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 I was under the impression you cannot get a recon turbo,or rather the vntunit fitted to the vw lump?Something to do with the fact they need balancing and it cannot be done here? If it is indeed a recon? where was it balanced? and where did they get the parts? Quote
Chris Young Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Could it be glow plugs or glow plug relay? happened to me on my 4b where the glow plug relay wire had snapped. Quote
