Sonic Posted June 9, 2007 Report Posted June 9, 2007 Hi, new to this site.Just bought my Galaxy M reg 98000 miles, 2.8 V6 GLX. Bought off ebay(saying low milage) ! So not expecting it to be brilliant. A few miner niggles which i've managed to sort. But this has me stumped.Speedo does not move, the digital display has stopped at 98K'ish miles and does not turn off, when the ignition is turned off and car locked up.??At the moment the guessing the speed by the Rev counter. All other electrics are fine, fuel, temp, windows, sun roof.Been looking for similar posts but haven't found any.Any ideas? As this would stop me crawlling past the the local speed cameras. I do have some mechanical knowledge so would like to attempt this one, before the garage burns my pocket. Thanks for reading. All theories welcome. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 9, 2007 Report Posted June 9, 2007 On the Gal, the mileage stays on even with the engine off, so no problem there. The signal to drive the speedo and hence increase the mileage is not getting through to the instrument panel. 2 usual causes: there will be a transducer on the gearbox that sends a signal - maybe this has stopped working (I had this fault on my old Rover 820) or else there is a break in the wiring somewhere. There are other possible reasons but these are the 2 most common; to check if the transducer is working it may be easier to get a garage to swap a new one in, on the understanding that if it does not solve the problem they will not charge for the part, just the labour for swapping/unswapping. Sonic Posted June 11, 2007 Author Report Posted June 11, 2007 Cheers Ivor for the quick response and the good ideas.Ok on Sunday had a look at the diplay panel and unplugged and replugged it, the Speedo flicks up and back down. Also been able to change the display from miles to KM and back again.Sounds like a good deal about the labour charge if it does not work. Will have to wait till I get the Gal back as in the body shop for a new bumper, indicator and passenger headlight. As some one reversed into it, apparently didn't see it. Can Quote
rbuzza Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 I know it may sound odd, but check the radio. The speed sensor goes through the radio before it gets to everything else, so it can increase the volume when you go faster to drown out road noise. It can be a problem if the radio has been changed and the new one isn't compatible Quote

Has it always been like this or did it happen suddenly / gradually over time? Do you have the correct size wheels and tyres fitted? Quote
tiny Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 (edited) Has anyone got access to a TIS disk? Ive lost mine, but seem to recall something about U/S speedo's being mention in the service information and also the need to replace the whole instrument cluster! I could be wrong but if you have access to TIS you could check it out. Edited July 26, 2007 by tiny Quote
claire Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 a part had burnt out on mine so i bought it off ebay. everything works but the speedo reads faster than it should . the wheels are the correct size. took the car to the garage and they say it might not be compatible with the car , so i was to try and change just the speedo's over and it should work . the part numbers are the same . seatkid Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 I think the calibration can be changed to match the model but you need a dealer with the right equipment. In any case it may not be changeable once it has been setup and used - to prevent fraud (clocking) Quote
insider Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 Do you have the correct size wheels and tyres fitted? Sorry, please ignore my previous comment - I replied too quickly. Even fitting 205/60 R13 wheels/tyres would only make a 12% difference, e.g. showing 67mph when you're actually doing 60mph. I wouldn't recommend this though. Apart from looking very silly you wouldn't get the required load rating at this size! For reference, fitting 195/60 R15s in place of 215/55 R16s would make the speedo show 5% faster than you're actually going. Quote
johnswlondon Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 claire,is your speedo is reading km not miles? Quote
insider Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 claire,is your speedo is reading km not miles?I guess what you're actually asking is "was the new speedo from ebay UK or European spec.?", i.e. if European it would read km only. UK spec. would have mph on the outside and km on the inside. Quote
