r&s Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Hi I appear to have the dreaded wiper problem. My wipers will work then get very slow and then just stop. They may restart after a short period. I have read a lot of posts on here about the same problem and have decided that the first place to look at is the wiper linkage and see it if has seized. How easy is it to get to the wiper linkage. Any help on finding them and advice on how to get them out would be very much appreciated. (I have looked in the forums but can't find anything on the location of them). Many thanks. Quote

r&s Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 Oops sorry! Its a 2001 1.9 TDI. Will take a look at the link. I did notice that you had done yours, well done. I did think of having a go myself but thought I should leave it to my hubby. I don't know a thing about cars! Quote
mumof4 Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Time to learn then hun..... I really do recommend a basic car maintenance course for all women....all i know i learnt from members on here and the course i did. Only thing i will say..is take your time with the linkage...and dont whack it with a hammer.LOL. Quote
r&s Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I suppose it is really. Maybe it would be a good idea if I actually went and opened up the bonnet and had a look, things might be a bit more obvious to me then. lol  Thanks for your reply. Quote
mumof4 Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 lol..you have to take some parts off to see the linkage..as you wont see it just by opening the bonnet. Quote
r&s Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 OK thanks will take a look. I am assuming it is obvious which bits need removing. Quote
mumof4 Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 The linkage is very tricky to get out if its the first time you are doing it..give yourself a few days to do to the job from start to finish.i took 3 days on mine...others have done it quicker but invariably broke something in the process. You will see a long black bit above the engine bay which covers the wiper linkage. Quote
r&s Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 Ok thanks very much for the advice. Will try at the weekend but I might just take a look this afternoon. Will let you know how I get on. Quote
mumof4 Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Ok..make sure you have everything you need before you start.....read the thread i did..as it does have some useful tips in it from other members. Quote

Many thanks. looks like i have the same problem as you!! checked the linkage last week sprayed wd40 on it still the same works for a bit then stops. checked motor today and it was red hot. was it just a case of removing the 3 fixing bolts to remove the motor and linkage?? i have noticed on the underside where the linkage is situated there appears to be another fixing point but with no apprent bolt to take out. its like a bracket and on the other side is a rubber seal. can you shed any light ta Quote
mumof4 Posted June 11, 2007 Report Posted June 11, 2007 The motor is hot because it is overworking..you need to take the linkage out and unseize it before you blow the motor...undo the 3 fixing bolts and it will be loose....you will have to unclip the motor which can be a bloody fiddly job..but take it slow and easy....dont try and yank it out before you have unclipped/undone everything.Take your time with unseizing..and DONT HIT IT WITH A HAMMER!! .You will need to take the airbox out of the engine bay to give yourself more room to work the linkage in/out. Read the link i posted..loads of help and tips on it from lots of members. I cant think which bracket you mean right now.......but if i were you..id get that linkage sorted PDQ before you blow the motor!! Quote
