nickwhite Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Has anybody bought the Ford branded roof bars for the new Galaxy yet? If so, how do they fit? Also, has anybody bought Thule or any other aftermarket part that fits the new model? I have Thule bars from my old Mk II and was hoping I could get replacement feet to allow me to use them on the new Mk III. Thanks. Any thoughts on a suitable four bike carrier would be appreciated too. Quote
AndyBee Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 We have the bespoke Galaxy roof bars, mainly because they "park" together at the rear end of the fitting channels and look a bit like a spoiler. The key differences are that the Thule bars extend out over the feet on either side (maybe useful for wider loads but look less tidy) and of course the bars themselves can be reused on other cars by replacing the feet. The Ford and Thule bars fit in a very similar way by slotting into the built-in channels. On balance if you have Thule bars that can be reused, I would stick with them and get new feet. Bike carriers are a bit of a problem. We had a Thule 973 4-bike carrier for our Mk II Galaxy, but no rear door mounted carrier is recommended on the Mk III. The options are roof mounting (and its a long way up to lift a bike) or tow bar fitted (but this obvioulsy requires the added expense of a tow bar of you do not already have one). Good luck - let us know what you decide (or have already decided). Quote

Tommie1 Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 For me, carrying bikes on the roof is no option anymore since I seriously damaged my Sharan some years ago. Putting on bikes and taking them off is quite difficult on these high cars. I also tried a tailgate carrier with 3 bikes on it, but I never felt confident about it. Although it was a Thule, I never had the impression that the thing was well fixed and really designed to carry 3 bikes. The best option is still to mount it on the towing hook, or to use a small trailer. I even saw such a thing at Decathlon that could carry 6 bikes! what I do like on the roof is a Skibox or rooftopbox. Quote
