slartybartfast Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 After the hassle with my thermostat (now changed), and with a tiny dribble of water leaking occasionally from the ball bearing hole on the water pump ( I guess the pump is on its way out!..deep joy)after all. But my water temp stays pretty much at the 3/4 hot mark then the fans kick in.( stays here with the A/C on also.. fan running at halpf speed) But not recently heard the hi speed fan on. no mater how I drive the temp normally sits at 3/4 is this normal? I have tried letting her idle for 20 mins or so, but the temp never seems to get hot enough to turn fan fully on. Or move up the guage much further! I am asking this because I have a 300 mile journey tomorrow and wanted to know what your normal temps are for water and oil. My water about 3/4 of the way and the rad feels hot. The oil temp when I'm around town or motorway from between 92deg c to 99 deg c on the digital display Is this too hot and should I be worried guys? Also does the display show 100 deg ?... as I have Not seen that yet! Thanks in advance btw its a mk1 sharan vw 2.0i petrol ady engine. Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 heya sb, I wont say it sounds normal, however this does seem to be the way they behave...I hate it too... Quote
slartybartfast Posted June 4, 2007 Author Report Posted June 4, 2007 Thanks for your reply mumble! I did the long run and timed it to avoid heavy traffic. The coolant temp on the sharan is not marked with numbers. (purely done with a line at each quarter of the guage.) Mine stays just below 3/4 all the time when driving, apart from when I hit traffic and get stationary. Put the blower on hot and open my windows up  I think the prob that I am having is that my waterpump is on the way out. (small seep out of the ball bearing type hole at the bottom of the pump) Going to have to bite the bullet I think (VW ADY 2,0 ltr petrol engine) and change the pump. For information my Sharan does have an oil temp on the digital display and throughout the journey it indicated between 98 deg c and 104 deg c. Not sure what kind of temp the oil should be but I don't want to go on driving around if I am going to cook the engine. Any idea folks? Thanks for all your help guys. Quote
mumof4 Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 I believe..it should be around 90..dont quote me on it though. Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted June 5, 2007 Report Posted June 5, 2007 I think people worry far too much about their engine temperatures. Engine oil is perfectly ok up to 150 Quote
