Hi

My 1997 90Bhp Tdi has all of a sudden decided to be a pig to start. Normally starts fine on the first turn but now cranks and cranks with copious amounts of white / grey smoke from the exhaust.

I suspect at 150,000 miles the glow plugs have given up but why all at once? The pre-heat lamp is illuminating as it always has so I am assuming the control circuit is working. I am going to check the plug resistance tonight but does any one have info on locating and checking the control circuit, relay etc.I assume the relay is controlled by the main brain ECU?

Thanks

Me Again

Re 90Bhp tdi 1997 no start.

I have now replaced all 4 glow plugs, I thought I was on the right track as all of the ones removed were inoperative.

Checked the plugs are heating

Still no start, I have bypassed the fuel filter to eliminate problems there, and the inj pump is drawing fuel ok from a separate supply (jug)

Removed No 1 injector, reconnected it out of the head and cranked the engine over, it was injecting but I suspect now only intermittently.

I have taken a look at the cam belt and it does not appear to have lost tension, so I don

two things come to mind

Timing has slipped - none of the pulleys are keyed and rely on being tightly bolted up - IIRC there are a number of posts regarding the bottom pulley slipping.

Doom and gloom!

Still no start, preheat relay replaced, temp sensors replaced, cam belt timing double checked and is spot on.

I hate Easy Start but with a small squirt she will start and run all day, drives normally,no smoke to speak of,run up to temperature and switch off and it will restart if you dont leave it too long, but 15 to 20n mins and she wont restart even with heat. Anyone got any idears, could it be the ECU controling the injection pump?

hmm

I had a broken hydraulic lifter in head (same 1.9tdi)- hard to start and copious white smoke when engine cold, minimal when warmed up. Youre due for a valve grind and new tensioner(if not yet changed) at 150k anyhow

my mate has a s reg 90 bhp tdi galaxy, it is a pig to start, just had new heater plugs fitted, but had major problems today was driving along and had a massive loss of power with loads of the white smoke coming out of exhaust, if he dropped a gear and floored it it would drive normal untill he took foot off acelerator then no power and loads of smoke, when he loses power he said was some funny noises coming from engine, possibly turbo. any ideas what this could be, im thinking may be crank pulley has corroded and is slipping under engine load

Hi

I took my troublsome 90bhp to a Diesel injection specialist today,he connected his diagnostic box and found a problem with the internal electrikcery of the injection pump. I blasted home, removed the pump and ran it back to him to sort out.

On the way there and back the car drove fine until i took my foot off the gas and coasted for some time from a high speed, when putting my foot on the gas again there was no power but loads of white smoke from the rear then all of a sudden it would clear and off we go again and drive perfectly. (sounds the same as graemewelch posting)

I will post the findings of the injection pump strip when i here what the news is.

Mine was doing that before it gave up totally.

When you say you checked the timing did you compare previous timing marks between pulley and belt or was it done the much harder but proper way?

My timing marks were still bang on because the pulley itself was moving.

Hope you get it sorted soon. Mine decided to drain its battery last night, could be the battery going faulty or a drain somewhere, I just want a car that works for more than a month at a time dammit!

The seeds of doubt are sown burundi. I checked the timing on mine going by my marks made when i replaced the belt 10,000 miles ago and of course all loooked ok. Having ponderd the issue i now see that they will be in line even if the bottom puly has rotated on the crankshaft.

When i replaced the belt previously i could not see the timing mark for the crank,is it on the flywheel and visable through the top hole in the gearbox/clutch housing?

burundi, in my experience of dealing with the galaxy engine (very little) the only way to check it properly is to remove all the belts including timing belt remove the bottom pulley and inspect it, after inspection slide it back onto crank and check for play, if you dont strip it all down youll never be 100% sure if its the pulley or not.

Yep, that's what the bloke at the diesel specialists said.

My mate checked the timing by looking at his marks from when he last changed the belt and they were still spot on. He wasn't aware of the pulley issue though so presumed my issue wasn't timing related.

My battery had died btw, it's now got a brand new battery on and all working again \o/

Hot Diggady Damn,its a runner. :16:

Collected the injection pump from Diesel Tune on Friday, the boss man says he found a couple of faults and it cost me
