slartybartfast Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 Hi Guys, sorry my first post is a problem, just wondering if anyone knows where the coolant thermostat is on my 1996 2.0i petrol MK1 sharan with climate control. There are 2 like suspects that I can see, one is on the very left hand side (pass side) of the block and has 3 nuts holding the housing in. The other has what looks like the ECT sensor plug on it but this is on the front of the engine (but still near the pass side) the hose from this one goes to the top of the radiator. I am thinking its the latter, but I didnt want to just start taking bolts off without having a good idea. I do have a haynes manual but as usual the photo looks completely different to my model and the location states (l/h side of engine block) not v helpful. Both of the suspect look pretty similar and both could physically hold the thermostat.. any idea which one guys please. Thanks for your help. (the reason why I'm suspecting the thermostat is the top rad hose is hot and the bottom is cold.. the expansion cap blew yesterday and the car was getting hot.. I can slow this heating down by turning on internal heater to hot).. The rad cooling fan operates at slow and fast speeds so its physically the water is not getting cooled by the rad.. (I thought the thermostat is in between the two) Thanks for any help guys p.s I do have photos but cannot upload them here yet.. any ideas? Quote
Justice Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 it is the housing on the side of the head with 2 sensors attached to it and 3 torx bolts holding it in place. Quote
slartybartfast Posted May 27, 2007 Author Report Posted May 27, 2007 Thankyou Justice for replying. That is where I thought it was, but having removed inspected all looking likely candidates (x2) on the passenger side of the cyl head. No Joy! Although I have found out since that it is supposed to be on the other side underneath the water pump at tht bottom of the engine. going to find out tomorrow. Will let you know! cheers Quote
Guest wolfie Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 it's mounted on the underside of the water pump housing, held in place by two bolts, stats rating is 87C-102C Quote
slartybartfast Posted May 28, 2007 Author Report Posted May 28, 2007 Thanks Wolfie for confirming. I have had a quick look underneath but looks like a bit of a bugger to get at. Also I can't see the bolts. Basically I just followed the rads bottom hose back.. goes into a plastiv coupling But I couldn't see any bolts. Maybe because I didn't jack the car right up? The Air cond compressor also seems to be very close to the location.. Maybe hindering any access? I do have a haynes manual and that is completely useless for my 2.0i petrol model unfortunately. Also could you tell me if they are Torx bolts please. Do I need to remove anything for access also. Thanks for all your help andy Quote
bigdaddy Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hi, I maybe throwing a spanner in the works, but the thermostat for a pre 98 2.0i model galaxy is at the right hand side of the engine, where the tempature sensor is located,,,,,,,,,,,now if you are talking about a pre 98 diesel galaxy,,,yes thats at the water pump located at the left side of the engine so your themostat is at the right side with the temp sensors and has 3 torx bolts holding it in place,,,,,,,,,(thanks Justice  ) ((((assuming the left side of the engine is at the drivers side,,,,and the right is the pass side)))) Quote
Guest wolfie Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 the 96 2.0Ltr Sharan has the VW ADY engine IIRC so according to my parts drawing the stat is located and in held in place with two bolts on the water pump housing where as the Galaxy has the Ford DOHC engine with the stat mounted on the block where you suggest Quote
bigdaddy Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 ooooopppsss me bad,,,,,,,thought the original post was for a galaxy not a sharan,,,,,,,sorry Quote
