Hi

I have a Galaxy, one of last ones of the old shape, early 2000 its a diesel.

When I'm driving along the accelerator cuts out intermittently, and if I take my foot off it & press it again it springs back into life & then after say a few mins, it happens again, really irratating.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction as to what the cause might be & how to fix this?

I also have a squealing rear wheel, I notice it more when driving at say approx 20mph, could this be the wheel bearing?

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The accelerator problem could well be the actual pedal unit, its a fly by wire system and a fault that has been covered on here before, use the search button and you will probably find a few threads on the subject.

The brake squeal is more likely to be the brake linings than the wheel bearing. a wheel bearing on the way out will have more of a whine or rumble than a squeal, and is more likely to get worse with speed.

Check your pads, if they are worn then replace them, if not, try smearing some copper grease on the METAL side of the pad, between the pad and the piston, this usually does the trick.

For info on replacing pads, again use the search function, the pistons screw back into the caliper and although straight forward, can be tricky if you "Go in blind" so to speak.

Hi

Thanks for that I'll check out the previous threads re: accelerator issue, can this problem be a relay playing up?

However the Rear wheel squeal - I've changed the brake pads & nosie was still there, they're not catching on anything.

The squeling stops when I press on the brakes, but as soon as I come off the pedal it starts again, so how can a little copper grease help in this case?

Thanks

Copper grease deadens the high frequency vibration between the pad and the piston, most pads now have a thin bonded shim on the rear face which does the same thing, but before these were fitted copper grease was commonly used.

Have you refitted any clips or shims that were originally fitted when you changed your pads? Clips on the pads are usually to cut down on squal rather than retain the pads, often brake squal occurs because people have damaged or lost any clips.

Hi

All the brake pad components were re-fitted as they were, yes the pins do have the wire clips on them.

The thing is I don't get the squealing noise when I brake its only when I'm driving. As soon as the brakes are applied the noise goes away.

Thanks
