mumble_bee Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) hmm.... can other v6 (mk1) owners pls tell me when their rad fan kicks in please.. mine waits right until its teetering on the M in N O R M.. then kicks in and goes down to the O...I really dont like it...but I've had every sensor/guage changed.. (some even twice)... .. would appreciate V6 feedback.... ..while we're there.. what is an acceptable temperature for the oil to get to ?mine will generally sit around 85 degrees in town.. but after alot of congestion it will be on 90...on the motorway its always over 100.... I havent had any problems yet.. but I'm freaky about fans and temperature...(comes from PC habits) look forward to feedback.. cheers. Edited May 23, 2007 by mumble_bee Quote
28vr6 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 My oil temp is about the same as yours had it up to 105 on a hard driven journey once, the cooling fans kick in quite early as I've never had the water temp display anything other than 50% full scale deflection on the guage - even when towing a caravan and a fully loaded car Quote
mumble_bee Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 thanks 28vr6... I did feel my cooling fan was coming in late. Quote
dipsomaniac Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 when sat in traffic, fans kick in when near to the red on mine before coming back to normal. it has been doing this since i bought the car 4 years ago. have also always had a coolant leak and have never found the problem despite replacing most of the cooling system. had a chemical check for exhaust gases on the coolant - all clear. Justice Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 When I use to give mine stick the oil would go upto 115 and the temp would sit just below 3/4, if I sat in traffic then the fan would kick in just before it reached a fraction over 3/4. Quote
Vince Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 It sounds like these usually do run quite high on the guage then. Our Vr6 often hovers between O and R on the guage, higher than I like to see, esp. when compared to our 2.3 which sits between N and O whatever you do to it. Vince. Quote
mumble_bee Posted May 25, 2007 Author Report Posted May 25, 2007 hmm... yeah there is a trend.. I wonder 28vr6.. is yours the same engine as the rest of us ? anyway THANK YOU MUCHLY people.. It sure puts my mind at rest..altho the economy is killing me.... OUCH... Quote
28vr6 Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Well it's a 2.8 v6 petrol engined galaxy that goes really well but needs lots of motion lotion regularly, but the temp guage has never been higher than 1/2 way ............ unless it knackered which it isn't as I've had replacement instrument cluster fitted and everything is normal  Quote
mumble_bee Posted May 25, 2007 Author Report Posted May 25, 2007 when I turn my aircon on.. the water temp never goes beyond half way too..altho thats cheating really.. cause the fans kick in at low speed.. Quote
turk90210 Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 there is no hard and fast rules with any gauges as they are only a "guide line",(fuel gauge included) this (in my thinking ) is why the manufactures use the word "NORM" between cold and hot on the temp gaugeyou tend to find that the different engines usually have 2 or 3 different coloured temp sensors which will show differently on the gauge so once you get to know your car you usually know where the temp gauge sits and what you can class as norm, the gauges will rise if sat in traffic which is normal until the fan kicks in then should come back down. This is usually the time when you notice a problem as normal driving keeps sufficient air flow over the radiator to keep it coolThe only way you can check the temperature is with a seperate temp reader then compare it to you gauge or if you have an obd scanner some of them have coolant temp readings for you to compare Quote
MarkRArnold Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 Hi, I'm reading your comments with interest! We have an Galaxy 4x4 Auto 2.8 V6 Ghia X (Mk1) which is having over-heating problems. The oil temp regularly goes above 100 which is quite alarming and in the past we've had the temp on the red with the red light on - we stopped and waited for ages until it cooled and then hobbled home. Yesterday, on the way home from shopping, the light above the temp guage started flashing, but the guage was right in the middle (on norm)! I thought this was a warning of low coolant, but there was plenty in the tank when I looked this morning! Also, we tend to have to keep the heater on in the cabin to keep the temp gauge down. This is a real pain especially when its hot outside! Our local mechanic has had a look several times. He's changed the thermostat, changed the switch that tells the fan to come on and he's done a full service (inc flushing the coolant and replacing it). Any ideas before we take to our local Fraud Dealers? Thanks,Mark. Quote
mumble_bee Posted May 27, 2007 Author Report Posted May 27, 2007 have you any of the usual head gasket warning signs? Quote
MarkRArnold Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 Not when our mechanic last looked a few weeks ago... havn't check today as it peeing down with rain!! Quote
John W VR6 Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Cold be the thermostat not fully opening, or check inside the expansion tank with the cap off and see if the water pump is circulating the coolant. If the 'stat is open it should all be moving around. It worked for me once, Be careful, use a rag or towel in case of hot coolant splashes, good luck. Quote
MarkRArnold Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 We've replaced the thermostat and I don't think thats it as the light comes on even when cold! Quote
28vr6 Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 Have you tried the temp sensors, there are three I believe on my V6 so any one could cause a premature warning, mounted on front right of block, could try removing one at a time to fault find - HTH B) Quote
DaveM Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 My V6 runs with an oil temp of about 90 to 115 depending on how i'm driving. The manual says that if the oil temperature reaches 145 degrees then decrease engine speed immediately, (but doesn't say switch it off !!)So don't panic.... 100+ is quite normal, in fact it's probably the optimum temperature for the oil to do what it does best.
