Today on my trip home from work (33 miles), I noticed some strange goings on with the temperature on the engine. After quite a few miles, I noticed the temperature was sitting at 50. Then the temperature decided to pop up to 90 - this happened very quickly - with a second or two. It stayed at 90 for a while then suddenly dropped back to 50. Again it stayed at 50 for quite a few miles, before heading quicky back to 90. This really puzzled me, so I played about with the cabin heater to see if this was possibly sucking all the heat from the engine, but the drops were so sudden, I cannot believe this was the case.

Any ideas, or has the alcohol in the antifreeze went to my temperature sensor's head?

Definitely a problem. Without wishing to go into Boyle's law again, the coolant temperature cannot suddenly rise or fall by 40 degrees in a few seconds. All movements of the temperature gauge should be gradual.

New sender required - or wiring to it loose - could be instrument or flexi circuit, but less likely.

Done Under Warranty,

Dealer has had a reputation for not giving me invoices for warranty work despite my requests.

When Air-Con compressor was changes I asked them for the invoice and they put a felt tip through the cost. When I had a look under light could see

Take it back to where you got it & let them fix it?

How are you going to check the wiring(visually I hope)put a multimeter(on resistance)& you'll blow the PCM instantly if it's still connected as the gauge is controlled by the PCM.For correct diagnosis you need to use Datalogger, unless

you have that all you can do is visually check it.You'll find it connected on a coolant hose on right side of engine,on diesel engines it's at front of engine(look for the 2 wires coloured blue & other brown).

Good luck
