Guest Baldeagle Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 (edited) Wife just called to tell me as she excellerated away at the lights the car went pop, then black smoke from the exhaust, and now a rough lumpy driving. Although the smoke seems to have stopped. I've no idea where to start looking for a possible cause for this. The cars a 03' Tdi. Any help or pointers would be appreciated Edited May 22, 2007 by Baldeagle Quote
NikpV Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 (edited) Possibly a sheared engine roll restrictor which now allows the engine to move enough to allow some ducting/pipes to open up - have a look at how much the engine moves when the accelerator is pressed ( may also cause some problems with air con piping) some more details here Edited May 22, 2007 by NikpV Quote
mumof4 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 umm..IIRC...you can try rocking the engine aswell by hand i believe??..if there is too much movement ( IIRC..a couple of inches?) then it could be the roll restrictor Quote
Guest Baldeagle Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Thanks for the quick responses. I now know what the problem is.....it was the intercooler pipe, the silly clipping system that they use broke. Fancy relying on two flangs to hold it in place. So I've ordered the part and pick it up tomorrow. Cheers Quote
NikpV Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 umm never heard(on here) of this breaking ... what caused it ?? Quote
tim-spam Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 (edited) A similar thing happened to mine and the cause was the spanner monkeys at the dealer not having re-fitted it properly after replacing a chafed water hose, which had chafed against the fuel filter which said spanner monkeys had left hanging by the hoses. As the car was just out of warranty, I refitted everything properly and all has been OK since. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the design - your problem will have been caused by incorrect fitting or damage, probably at the dealers. Edited May 22, 2007 by tim-spam Quote

Have to admit that I to thought that some garage monkey had damaged it, and since Ford are the only ones to have serviced it it goes to show you can never really be sure who or what is working on the vehicle. Just glad I spotted the problem before sending it to a garage to be ripped off for a simple replacement. Thanks also to everyone that's put my mind to rest about the way these are clipped into place.
