I have a question

 

I have a 2.8 V6 1996 Galaxy, I had to take the air filter off to get at the brake fluid bottle yesterday

 

Now all "was" looking good and I connected everything back up

 

On starting the car, the wiring from the 2 pin connector on the MAF caught fire !!!

almost melted the entire loom.

 

I've had to remove this connector completely to get the car working, also had a blown fuse ECU

the two wires have completely melted from the plug to the large connector on the right hand side of the HT leads

 

would anyone happen to have a clue as to the problem?

From what I can remember it was technically inconclusive anyway. It was said that there seemed to a pattern of engine bay fires in early Galaxy's and the OP was looking for some sort of redress from Ford. I think my valuable contribution was to say that if Ford didn't give a toss about problems on nearly new Galaxy's, then what would you expect them to do about a twelve year old vehicle that could be said to have had it's useful life?

 

I doubt part looms are available from Ford, so you've taken the only course open to you. While the Auto electrician has the car I would get them to check the condition of the wiring where it passes into the tailgate, it may help to avoid another incendiary incident.

What about sourcing a loom from a scrappy??..loads of peeps out there breaking galaxys..

 

there is a place on the net called a to b breakers..you tell them what you want and then they source one for you.Ive used them before.

Eh? ...... best I go and break mine then before they nick all the bits .... :lol: No, judging by the quality of the wiring I've seen on mine its not surprising that wiring looms catch fire. Havent got a clue about what's caused yours matey and to be honest, you are better off with a new loom as you dont really know what else could have been affected, even with the ECU fuse blowing.

Hmm..so looms arent good to get from a breakers yard then?Ive sourced other parts from breakers yard..it is where i got my alt from with a 6 month warranty.

I wouldnt ......whats the chance of it happening again if the wiring's sub standard in the first place? .....

Hi again

 

The garage have just phoned and are going to have to replace the loom right back to the ECU :lol:

 

They reckon it'll take a few days to complete, at a cost of several hundred pounds

 

I was going to have the windows tinted today but now I've just lost another

Holy smoke......id get a second opinion!..never mind half bottle of Gin ..best get a bottle of whatever the Mrs drinks in for medicinal purposes!.Did you authorise the work......if not..get a second opinon..as that is a lot of money!

Are the electricians quoting a fixed price or is it on a strip it and see basis? what about a new ECU? It may sound harsh but you need to think about what this car is worth and whether this is throwing good money after bad. If you were to break the car up you could make a good few bob flogging the bits on here.

either that or make a claim on your insurance?

Just walked down to the garage, galaxy pieces everywhere :wacko:

 

This is gonna cost alot, I can tell by all the parts lying around, they've also found that some pipes were not connected :wacko:

 

when they do re-assemble it there might be further problems

 

Is an insurance claim an option?

 

I suppose it was an accident sort off, as it was me who took the connector off to add brake fluid

 

Never considered that I could put in a claim.

I asked my insurance when I had similar problems last year and they weren't interested. They regard it in a similar light to a seized engine or broken gearbox - to be expected on an old car (and ours was only five years old at the time). I asked what would happen I hadn't disconnected the battery when it started smouldering and it had developed into a full fire......and they would have paid out for that. With hindsight disconnecting the battery was a decision I regret.

I'm still waiting to find out from the garage when they can get a loom from :wacko:

 

Does anyone on here know where I can find a supplier that can search by reg number

 

Mechanic seems to be strugling as ford haven't been able to find the part number

Hun..have you contacted the insurance company????..how much is the garage quoteing you??or is it a ooo shall see how it goes??..you must get in touch with insurance company...if no help there..pit the repair costs against the value of the car.....

Personally I would re-ignite the loom and walk away !

 

With the insurance money you can buy another one.

I was told by Ford that looms are made to order on 12 weeks lead time. Can you be sure that the damage is confined to the engine loom - will it be found on stripping that it's carried on into the main loom?
