Glyn Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Hi, Just bought a 2003 1.9 TDI Zetec 115PS (manual 6 speed). Want to replace the worn gear gaiter but can't figure out how the gear knob comes off! Please help. Thanks, Glyn. Quote
mumof4 Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 does the knob not just unscrew? Welcome to the club. :16: Quote
Glyn Posted May 9, 2007 Author Report Posted May 9, 2007 (edited) Hi, Tried that ... and twisting, pulling .... no apparent screw fixing that I can see, I'm baffled. Every other car I've owned the gear knob has simply unscrewed. It could just be stiff but I'm a big fella and have given it a good old twist (in both directions) but to no avail. Is it definitely a screw-on screw-off? If so I'll give it another go. Thanks for the reply and the warm welcome :16: Glyn. Edited May 9, 2007 by Glyn Quote
mumof4 Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 i would assume..that with it being on for a few years..it might be a bit stiff..so if you give it a good tug then try unscrewing it..that might work?or maybe lubricate it a bit?see if that works it loose? :16: remember......lefty loosey...righty tighty!!...try trying to tighten it then loosening it.. Guest wolfie Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 actually no! you dont unscrew it! later knobs are held in place by clips! you need to pull the gaitor up over the knob, then you can see the clip? IIRC? you will need a new clip when you replace the knob! Quote
gregers Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 better still let ur missus have a go..................... :16: :16: Quote
Glyn Posted May 9, 2007 Author Report Posted May 9, 2007 (edited) lol ..... You Guys :16: Yep, can see below the gaiter there is a metal ring around the botom of what may be the knob - hard to tell as can't see if this part is a continuation of the knob or just buts upto it. If it is and needs to be removed, how can I get the ring off - it looks fairly solid with no breaks? Just plier it off? Thanks, Glyn. Edited May 9, 2007 by Glyn Quote
Guest wolfie Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 the knob is held in place by a clamping ring, which in turn is held in place by the retaining ring! the ring/clip is the part you destroy by the sound of it! as it's recomended to replace it when you remove the knob! Quote
broom broom Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 oh wolfie you do know alot about knobs and rings :16: something you want to share with us :16: Quote
Glyn Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Posted May 10, 2007 Hi, Thanks for the help .... I still haven't figured it out yet but I'm sure I'll get there. Cheers, Glyn. Quote
andyw2000 Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Hi, did you ever do this???? I just got mine off by pulling the clip apart with a small screwdriver, it just needs to be loosened enough to allow the four plastic lugs to come out of the groove that holds the gear knob on. With these loosened it just pulls off. The problem I have now is getting the gaiter (which I am trying to replace) off of the gear knob. There is the gear knob, a shiny ring then the gaiter, then underneath is a black plastic sleeve which has a bit inside that goes over the gear stick..... but how does it come out??? I tried prising it with a screwdriver but its going to snap!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote
