Apologies if this has already been answered, but I have searched thorugh the posts and cannot find a definitive answer.

How often should the timing/camshaft belt be changed on my Galaxy - a 2000 Zetec 115 BHP TDi with auto box?

I thought it was every 60,000 miles, but after reading the "Warranty and Service Guide" it looks like every 40,00 miles from the camshaft section on page 19.

I have just bought the car from a Ford dealer and it came with "Full Service History" and all services were done with the dealer I bought it from. The car has 45,000 miles and I was given duplicate receipts for the services, so I know the belt was NOT changed at 40K.

Should it have been done at 40K, or is it not due until 60K?

Thanks for your help.

Jim,The very first facelift galaxies were sold with only 1 year's warranty/60,000 mile cambelt change interval.....such was the case with my last 115 tdi!

It's build date was april 2000. you will also probably find that if you try to replace the front brake pads with "aftermarket" pads you will be supplied with ones to fit 16" wheels? they wont fit..even though the zetec DOES HAVE 16" WHEELS!..get the ones for the earlier model std size :o

call ford customer care on 0845 8411111 and ask for the build date of your vehicle chassis no. or VIN

for those of you whose cambelt intervals are 40,000 miles [built after may 2000"I think"] you will be pleased to know that your 3 years warranty is paid for with many more visits to ford main dealers while the car is still "in warranty period" :o

:o er :o Thanks jim  ...corrected :o

Thanks Dave,

My car was first registered at the end of October 2000, but I don't know what the build date was - will check with Ford.

In your last sentnce should the mileage be 40,000, as I am confused by the reply.

I am even more confused though, by why Ford say the belt can last for an extra 20,000 miles if the car was built after a certain date - unless it is a different belt of course.

(I think) there was a new design introduced during 2000 using new belt - this coincides with the introduction of VW's "WIV" option (Variable service interval - not available in UK?) which allows servicing intervals to be extended up to 50,000km! (diesel models) dependent on the service indicator.

SEAT inspection and maintenance plan (service book) for my 98 Tdi clearly states 60,000 miles/90,000 km for Cambelt and Tension roller replacement required.

Best way to clear up your confusion is to phone Ford customer care.

I tried Ford customer case first thing this morning, but they were closed - I assume for the new year holiday. Will try tomorrow or failing that on Monday.

I like the sound of a 50,000 km service though. <_<

HI fredt,

The 11th and 12th characters of my chasis number are Y and Y again.

From your info, it looks like the build date of my car is then October 2000? Nice to know that crazy string of numbers actually mean something.

Thanks,

Jim

Doesnt seem to work for SEAT VIN - my letters would be V and no.5 - any idea Fredt?

Yup, just looked at it...

Unfortunately all I can see is an optional tick box for cambelt change against every service interval going. In other words - pick a number - can we do this customer?

Please consult my dealer and his workshop manager .....

Sorry, I was wrong again. For your YY 1.9 PD auto it comes up with:

Extended period maintenance

Camshaft drive belt, tensioner and idler - Every 40,000 miles or five years renew (LTS 21 304 9)

So it looks as if it should have been changed. Naughty - not a FSH? <_<

Thanks again seatkid,

I was assured the vehicle had a FSH, but it would now appear not! At least they didn't leave out something important like filling up with window washer, it was only the timing belt <_< .

I shall be contacting them on Monday to see what can be done - I will obviously be looking the belt to be done FOC - not a good start, but lets see what Monday brings.

Jim

Just to clarify to others reading this - The Ford TIS service checksheets state cambelt/tensioner/idler renewal is due at:

60,000 ml / 5 years for Tdi manual/auto (11/1994-03/2000)

40,000 ml / 5 years for PD manual/auto (04/2000 -)

Looks like the PD costs a lot more to service in the long run than the old Tdi!

Jim - my Gal's VIN number also contains YY so I had already investigated and found that it was built in Oct 2000, although not first registered until 29 Jan 2001 (It's booked in for its first MOT on Jan 5th and I'll be taking the V5 to hopefully get it dated for a year from then).

Page 19 of the servicing guide I got with it states 40,000 miles or 5 years as the cambelt change interval for Galaxy diesels. We'd better start saving now.....

Hi Ivor,

I'm hoping the dealer will honour the FSH and do the belt as they should have done 5,000 miles ago - I assume it was an oversight on their behalf, given the change from 60K to 40K in/around the time my car was built.

Also I will not be bothering with the MOT on my car until October 2004 - an advantage of living in NI as opposed to the rest of the UK is that cars do not have their 1st MOT until they are 4 years old. :D

Oh, and just to confirm all the info previously given, build date on my car is 30/09/00 and cambelt change at 40K - from Ford Customer Care. Top marks to the detective team involved. :)

good luck, i got the classic from my dealer, again at 45000 miles fsh no belt change, so right lets change it ourselves. rang dealer got belt , asked for idler, told they never sold one. i then asked about interval, passed on to service department there gem was belts anyware around 50000 and idler only if it made a noise,,,,,,, needless to say changed.

ps ford belt is only guaranteed for 12000 miles/ 12 months anyway when replaced. found this out when a ford belt snapped at 13000 miles on a escort td.

EVSS, your 98 model Tdi is 60,000 mile change (see previous post)

I wonder how many cambelt failures there really are? (and at what mileages) - I know that manufacturer nowadays cover their backs following lack of advice years ago that led to loads of failures then..

Any member/guest had a tdi/pd cambelt go?

For easy VIN decoding, just visit this website:

Works for ALL makes and models.

well i changed them at 45000, just to be safe, normally do when buying a secondhand vehicle for safety.

just out of interest what would you do as regards recourse against ford if the cambelt gave up before 60000 and you were not the original owner, i personally think you wouldnt get far, there bound to have an excuse.

There was a lot in the press and some legal cases a few years ago about cambelt breakages (Citroen I think) . If you have a FSH (they might insist on dealer FSH though that is no longer a legal getout) then I dont think you have a problem. Only exception is if there was evidence you abused it e.g racing, taxi work etc.
Posted

Thats not wot I meant! :)

Taxi work is classed as by ford as "severe duty" - due to extended periods of idling - causes engine lubrication problems and wear outside their normal mileage/timing criterea

Hi all

I've recently purchased a 2001 TDI Ghia with 43,000 miles and FSH. The cambelt page in the service book had not been stamped so assuming it had not been replaced by the previous owner, I've just had the cambelt replaced at my local Ford dealer. When I asked to see the old belt it was a Ford part with Ford stamp and part number on it. Does anybody know if the original belts fitted from new would have been a VW part or has this belt been changed already and I've just wasted

Posted

Its probably been changed  as (i think) the engines are assembled in germany (vw plant) - you should check out the FSH with a Ford dealer - everything should be detailed on their computer (all the parts used etc.)

The TENSIONER MUST BE REPLACED when the cambelt is changed.

Ford instruction nr.213040 - Changing Timing Belt - does not specifically state that the tensioner should be replaced and I suspect that is why dealers sometimes don't do it. But the service checksheet clearly state replacement is required (along with any idlers) and Ford issued a TSB stressing that the tensioner MUST be replaced.

Summary

During repair work on the engine or when installing a new timing belt tensioner, the timing belt tensioner nut must be tightened to a revised torque.

Note: A new timing belt tensioner must always be installed. DO NOT install a used timing belt tensioner.

The relevant procedures in the Workshop Manual/TIS-CD will be amended to include this new information at the next update.

1. Remove the timing belt according to Operation Number 21 304 0 (Workshop Manual/TIS-CD).

2. Remove and discard the timing belt tensioner.

3. Install the timing belt.

WARNING: Use suitable insulating tape to cover the sharp edged cutting part of the drill bit. Failure to observe this instruction can lead to injury.

Note: Install a new timing belt tensioner.

Note: Use a new 4 mm drill bit.

4. Install the timing belt tensioner.

1 Turn the eccentric on the timing belt tensioner clockwise, until the drill bit can be inserted.

2 Tighten the timing belt tensioner in two stages.

Stage 1: 20 Nm

Stage 2: 45 degrees

5. Install all other components in reverse order.
