rudders Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hi , i have a strange noise when i start up, it sounds like the starting motor is not disengaging this will happen 8 out of 10 times , but it sometimes happen when you are driving aswell which then i thought it was the auxiliary belt so i got a genuine one but it's still no good. Would it be the starting motor if this is happening as i was driving, this has only happened twice and it last's for about 15 sec. Could it be a dry pulley or something? I was going to buy a new starting motor but it was Quote
mikej Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hi rudders not sure which model you have but i have the 2.3 twin cam mk2 and have had the the usual sticking starter motor . On startup when the key is released you will get a horrible noise for a few seconds after this is truly the starter sticking however do not go out and buy a new one as there is no need ! if you remove it from the car take it apart and clean it , remove all the carbon dust from the brushes and generally give it a good clean lightly lube the shaft and gears and all will be well for a few years when you may have to do it again. i can asure you if you can use a spanner it is simple to do .To strip, clean and rebuild takes no longer than 20 mins and that is being thorough mind.As far as it sticking when driving i have never heard of this and would be a little concerned or do you mean it never realesed on startup and you drove it anyway ? I have had a noise form the front of the car when driving which sounds idential to the startermotor but this i'm sorry to say was the aircon compressor siezing , again i was lucky and had the system regassed and some oil added this freed the compressor and saved me a fortune . Hope this helps. Quote
rudders Posted April 23, 2007 Author Report Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) Hi mikej , i have the mk1 2.3 ghia x , You are a diamond i shall do that with the starting motor fella. The starting motor did realesed on startup but after about 10 mins of driving it did it, i will it the aircon compressor checked out just in case it is starting to siez because that is a possability aswell. Cheers for that mate you have been a big help . :( Edited April 23, 2007 by rudders Quote
johnswlondon Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 when the starter motor starts squealing you `could` grease the shaft and reassemble.##but i wouldnt. 1.the bolts are very inaccessible2.if a piece breaks off the shaft of the starter motor it could wrech the flywheel teeth3.reconditioned starter motors can be bought for 75 pounds non exchange from an ebay shop, which i will give you the link to provided you are all extremely grateful4.the regrease technique cant be done where the tip of the shaft is worn which is usual(the tip should have a 45 degree angle on each fin tip) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/S266-Ford-Galaxy-2-0...1QQcmdZViewItem this fits the 2.0 and 2.3 16valve(thats the dohc unit) Quote
Smilge Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 John, I'm not to sure about "re-greasing the shaft". Are you talking about the bendex shaft? If so then its not a good idea to grease this as this can compound the problem. The usual thing to do is to to apply a liberal amount of degreaser to the shaft and clean it thoroughly so that the bendex gear slides up the shaft without sticking. By lifting the starter vertically the gear should then slide back without any help. This is a common problem with a "sticky starter" where the gear remains at the top of the shaft preventing it from disengaging the motor and "crunching" the flywheel. Another problem could be the solenoid where the contacts temporarily weld themselves together due to the current involved and the build up of carbon. Scraping the carbon out of the gaps between the commutator segments is good practice. Hope this helps Quote
