tdi90 Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 Just come back from a weekend away in the caravan. On the way there (45 miles) the wife complained about getting a head ache (nowt new there) but on the way home we all suffered from head aches. While I was putting the rear seats back in, the air vents from the rear heater had black sooty stuff on the carpet. I know the marks wernt there before cos I took all the seats out and hoovered inside before we went. I am now really really really worried that fumes from the engine are getting back into the cab. Has anyone any thoughts on this please? Quote
Guest wolfie Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 the rear heater unit is a recirc unit, it has no access to outside air, the only way it can gain access to outside air/fumes! is via any cable or pipe work entry holes! of which there are a few in that area! the coolant feed pipes to the heater unit are IIRC fairly close to the exhaust for the aux heater under the car, take a look under the car and see if you see if any of the gromits around these pipes are missing or torn? then are you 100% sure it's fumes from the exhaust? possible heater fan motor buring out? wiring failing? resistor pack failing? all these things will produce fumes that will diagree with you if you get enough of them! tdi90 Posted April 22, 2007 Author Report Posted April 22, 2007 Thanks, I`ll have a look under neath now. Quote
tdi90 Posted April 22, 2007 Author Report Posted April 22, 2007 How stupid do I feel  Jacked the Gal up, looked underneath and what did I see???? an exhaust back box swaying in the breeze! It had rusted through where it meets the centre pipe. 2 hours of bodging has got it all back together and sealed air tight. That`ll last til next payday :D The underneath of the car is pure black soot, so it looks as though thats where the fumes were coming from. Panic over. I only just put a tuning module on it cos I thought it was a tad slow pulling the caravan. Now the exhaust is sealed and connected it goes like a rocket :D Quote
lazyb5 Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 How strange is this, week away with caravan came home to find exhaust hanging down. Black soot all over underside of car and rear silencer seperated from exhaust. We only went 80 miles to the coast so didnt suffer any headaches. Mine just cost Quote
gregers Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007  :D at least youve tracked the problem down Quote
tdi90 Posted April 22, 2007 Author Report Posted April 22, 2007 We never noticed any noise change either, which is why I didnt check the exhaust first  Quote
