hi i have a 1.9tdi galaxy auto on a 99 v plate

we tow with it with a new bailey ranger 550/6 superb machine cant fault it

we took it out a couple of weeks ago on a journey of approx 80 miles

60 miles in i had no drive

let it cool drive again

the ford garage say that the fluid transfer isnt correct but its something they dont do

im in the thinking that the gearbox fluid is low and the "filter needs changing too" (to quote the other ford garage)

where is the "filter" located as ivenever heard of an auto gearbox needing a filter

where do i find the level plug and do i fill it via the level plug too

and what fluid is needed

also do i need a bigger cooler as the engine temp goes up slightly

also can the oilcooler be increased in size!! and also where would i get one from

If I were you I`d get the oil changed ASAP not just topped up. See how much a service would be from ya local garage.

It shouldnt need an extra oil cooler fitted for towing.

do you think i have fried the fluid!

are the drain points easy to find and how much fluid do i need

im fairly good with engines etc just really need a heads up as to amounts and type of fluid etc

cheers

been through my haynes manual ,and it makes no mention of a filter ,it also says that the manufacturers state the gearbox is "filled for life" with no requirements for the fluid to be changed at regular intervals. The filler plug is located on the front of the transmission,it's tucked down pretty low so might take some finding!

Drain point is under the autobox sump , manual says refill the box with 3 litres of the correct oil( see fords and get ripped off ! )start engine, move gear selector through the gear positions ,stop engine ,then with the car on level ground start the engine ,unscrew the level plug from under the transmission ,if the level of the oil is too high it will drip from the overflow pipe, if the level is too low ,no oil will drip from the over flow pipe and fluid should be added until it starts to drip from the over flow pipe-this sounds a bit of a chew on ! to get a better idea a haynes manual has some pretty good pics and drawings of what to do .

hi empited via the drain overflow about a litre came out

then undid the sump and removed the sump oil very dirty but no particles

im thinking at the viscosity its the wrong oil looks and smells like 20/50

ive bought 3 ltrs from halfords ford specific oil at 6.29 a litre

so if it take 3 then its a cheap job

if you take the sump off

dont do like i did and have some paper ready to catch the 3lts etc oil thats pisses all over your arm ace

any thing else you guys can add

i would be pleased to hear

steve
