2.3 Performance Clarification Please.

Hi All,

I've just purchased my first Galaxy, a Mk1 1999 2.3 Ghia and keenly looked up the specs on the Parkers website. I was suprised to see that the Mk1 2.3 has a 0-60 time of 10.1s compared to 12.3 for the Mk2

The Mk2 is only 20kg heavier than the Mk1 and the bhp is the same for both at 142 (but I thought Mk1's had 145?), so would the difference be due to higher gearing in the Mk2?

 

Iv'e just noticed that Parkers says that The Mk1 and Mk2 2.3's are both fuel injected but What Car says only the Mk2 is. Who is right?

 

What Car says that the Mk1 has peak torque at 4500rpm compared with 2500 for the Mk2 which is a bit of a disapointment as I was looking forward to the low down torque. How flat is the torque band of the Mk1. I don't usually go anywhere near 4500!!!

available in thre models - the GLX and highly specified Ghia and Ghia X models.......

 

......increased final drive ratio to 4.24:1 .......

 

 

.....manual 2.3 litre achieves 0 - 60 in 10. seconds and 30 - 50 in fourth gear in 8.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 121 mph .....automatic gets to 60 mph from rest in 11.2 seconds and has a top speed of

117mph

 

 

both versions are fuel injected, parkers suck! as do what car! max bhp at 5,500rpm max torque at 2,500 rpm big difference!

I've seen the power quoted as 145, 143 and 142. I think some of the Confusion comes from mixing PS (European) and BHP figures.

 

Bhp to PS (hp DIN), divide by 1.0139, PS (hp DIN) to Bhp, multiply by 0.9863. So 145PS = 143 BHP. Not sure where the 142 BHP comes from them.

 

Somewhere along the way the engine was tweaked to improve its emissions which may have lost another 1BHP. At this point the Combined MPG dropped from 28.2 to 28MPG.

 

FWIW Autocar quoted 143BHP / 150lb/ft for the '97 2.3. They also tested it (rather than quoting manufacturers figures) at 0-60 11.1 Secs, 0-100 38.8 Secs, 30-70 11.3 secs, 60-0 3.7 Secs (that would bring your breakfast back!).

Dont forget mk1 is 5 speed and mk2 has 6 speed gearbox that may give the cars performance some diffirence.

For every engine Except for Ford's own 2.3 which still makes do with the 5 speed box I believe. Edited April 19, 2007 by neiluk
