IceBoy Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Keep reading lots of thing about this but not sure what is it and what it does? what happen if the Gal has a faulty one? Quote
Dave-G Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 All will be revealed if you read the first topic in the FAQ's ;) Probably a bit late to start thinking of this now as the mean temperature is above 10 degrees anyway - you'll see whati mean as you read that thread. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Keep reading lots of thing about this but not sure what is it and what it does? what happen if the Gal has a faulty one? It wont work. ;) car will take longer to heat up to temp...cabin will be freezing for longer and your fingers will turn blue before they heat up..apart from that..nothing much really.Mine hasnt worked for..oooooo....yonks now. big_kev Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 The galaxy TDi engines are so efficient that very little of the fuel is wasted as heat......hence good mileage compared to petrol. The downside is that because of this it takes forever and a day for the bloody things to warm up. Engines are designed to run hot and most of the wear takes place when they are below the optimum operating temperature. The booster is a simple little diesel heater fitted below the rear nearside passenger door.....you will see a little diddy exhaust down there. It helps to warm the water up so that the engine can reach its ideal operating temperature more quickly.Obviously as this same water is used to heat the passenger compartment it has the nice effect of helping you car to be warm in winter. It depends a lot on the type of driving you do as to the effect it will have if not working. If you do a lot of miles at speed then the engine will heat up reasonably quickly anyway and there will be little difference. If you do a lot of about town driving then it may never reach its ideal temperature and excessive engine wear will result.....plus it will be bloody freezing all the time. Hope this helps. Quote
Guest wolfie Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 The galaxy TDi engines are so efficient that very little of the fuel is wasted as heat......hence good mileage compared to petrol. the fact that fuel used in a TDI has a lower calorific value and produces less heat output from the combustion process has little to do with it then ?diesel only produces 19.300 btu/lb compared to petrols 20.400 btu/lb when burnt hence why the TDI engine runs cool and needs the booster heater ;) Quote

There is almost twice as much petrol used compared to a diesel, some of this petrol does generate additional power but the majority is wasted as heat. Quote

I thought the rear heater was just for warming the rear compartment as the heater at the front wasn't big enough or you would fry at the front when it was just right in the back. The only reason I query it is when I've heard the rear heater running and there's only me in the car I've turned it off at the climate control facia but presumably I'm only turning the fan off and the heater is still actually burning fuel to heat the water. Bob We have two heaters in the rear of diesel galaxies. The one inside the car, behind the middle row nearside seat mostly recirculates air within the car, and I think, draws a small amount in from the ouitside via the box section beneath the car - hence someone finding soot on the carpet in the area of that heater when they got a hole in their exhaust. The Auxilliary heater is an oil fired heater beneath the car (below the nearside middle passenger seat) which heats the engine coolant at ambient temperatures below 10 degrees C - Theres more to it but hopefully you get the idea? big_kev Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Thanks Dave...........I was just going to say that Quote
