Guest maxton Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Ford Galaxy 1.9 turbo Diesel Auto 115 psi When going along a road at about 30 to 40mph and when putting foot down hard on the accelerator the car revs seem to go round to the red line before anything happens I have been told this is a problem with the gears on an Auto box not meshing and could need a new part costing Quote
NikpV Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 despite having an auto I'm not sure how it all works but isn't this handled by the 'kickdown', on this box which has sports mode actuated by a fast depression of the accelerator this should product a drop in gear and then the box will hold that lower gear for longer before changing up it sounds like you are gettiing sports mode but no kickdown - I thought that was handled by a simple switch but I'm often wrong :16: Quote
Grumpy Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 This sounds horribly like a slipping gearbox rather than kick-down. Does the car accelerate hard when this happens or not? There is a fault with the auto box on the diesels but I would have hoped by the 03 model they would have sorted it. Put the car in tiptronic (the gear selected is displayed on the dash [it is on mine anyway]) and select 4th or 5th then accelerate hard but not right down (to avoid kick-down), if the gearbox is slipping then the revs will rise to the redline without the gear display changing. If this happens then it could be a major re-build required. From what I understand, the gears in an auto box are always in mesh, a number of clutches are used to engage and dissengage each gear.
