lydanial Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 hi again all. i seem to have a strange rattling noise when i start the gal... this only does it when its cold (usually only in the morning cold) and then probably wont do it for the rest of the day.. it may also do it if it has not been run for a few days. anyway if i look down by the front right wheel trhere is a belt behind there that seems to be having jumping sessions when its rattling (kind of bouncing up and down and not running smoothly). does anyone know what this belt is connected to AND do you think this is whats causing the rattle .. thanks Quote
Neils TDi again Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 does anyone know what this belt is connected to AND do you think this is whats causing the rattle .. The noise your hearing is the accesory belt tensioner bouncing up and down as the belt starts to flex, there are two causes firstly the belt may just be worn and need replacing or secondly, the tensioner itself may be weakening and will need replacing. My suggestion would be to replace the belt first then see if the noise abates. Quote
Dave-G Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Take a look here - does this sound like your problem? Get a small screwdriver or nail file even and see if you can turn the top of the alternator fan towards the front of the car. If it don't move you have a conclusive answer courtesy of Littledaz. After youve read the post where this link takes you read the entire thread with a cuppa - you'll see what I'm getting at. alternator pulley Quote
