nhawan Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 I recently bought a Galaxy Tdi Ghia 53 reg (2003) and am reasonably happy with it after fixing the booster heater problem.. The only problem I have now is that the fuel economy seems to be very bad. The computer usually stays around the 25-28mpg range when around town but the actual real life figures don't match up.I have been monitoring how many miles I do for given amounts of fuel and it not good at all.I put in Quote
big_kev Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 That is a really really bad fuel comsumption....mine would get better even if it was towing yours. Check the obvious......no-one nicking your diesel......fuel leak......neat diesel leaving exhaust Quote
lydanial Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 a friend of mine is getting 600 miles to a tank out of his 98 tdi, i am only getting about 400-450???!!!?? although i am reading 40mpg average on the number 2 setting (which i reset on every fill up). Quote
Davetheref Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 I still have my 130ps TDCI 53 Gal (just) and I have always got around 500-550 mile per full tank. Around town always around 35-40 mpg and on runs, if I dont hammer it, around 45-50 mpg. So I would say you do have a problem there. I think there are a lot of previous posts that could point you in the right direction but you will have to search to find what you need. Quote
zeplin43 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 The best results are obtained by filling your tank right to the top ride the car till it comes near to the reserve and then fill it up as close as possible to the first time.Taking note of how many gallons to fill tanks vrs. how many miles you have driven gives you the exact fuel consuption. nhawan Posted April 4, 2007 Author Report Posted April 4, 2007 I appreciate th replies from everyone. I forgot to mention that I only travel 2 miles to work and back on a regular basis. Most of the other trips are also very short around town. Do you think that would be the reason for the bad economy? The car has also done 117000 miles. Would the high mileage be a problem? Quote

Do you think that would be the reason for the bad economy?Yes it would - in fact, I would say that your economy under these circumstances is not bad at all. The car has also done 117000 miles. Would the high mileage be a problem? No. Quote
Big Tyke Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 (edited) nhawan i do about the same amount and type of mileage as you but my mpg is around the 35/40 to the gallon. alot depends on the condition of the engine and the car itself. if regulary serviced and not abused (usually by previous owners) in the way you drive, the tyres at the right pressure, the list can go on and on. follow some of the other suggested ways to check your actual mpg and see what the final figures are. best of luck Edited April 6, 2007 by Big Tyke Quote
suzuki91 Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 my 98tdi 180k miles 5 miles to work and back 43mpg....some thing must be wrong?? Quote
NikpV Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 failing maf sensor can affect the fuel economy(before perfomance) what sort of mileage has it done commonly 40-50k (although not all cars seem to suffer though) Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I travel about 6 miles each way to work. On the way there, the trip computer reads about 25mpg after the first couple of miles, usually risen to about 40 by the time I park at work. If you're driving in "traffic" for those 2 miles, low 20's mpg is reasonable; be thankful yours isn't petrol engined - it would be running "on the choke" for those 2 miles and maybe returning less than 10mpg Quote
Guest wolfie Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 (edited) http://www.sleepmaker.com.au/images/lady-yawning.jpg sorry tdi fuel consumption has that effect on people! Edited April 6, 2007 by wolfie Quote

mumof4 Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 seriously though.2 miles is not long enough to get an accurate reading i believe.and you use more fuel on shorter journeys than you do longer ones.i reckon that you need to get her on the open road for a bit..say at least half an hour and do a steady speed.sometimes when i do short journeys then the mpg is quite low, there again the other day when i was doing on average.*cough*90mph i was on the second setting averaging 39.8 mpg but on the first setting i was doing 40.5 mpg. yes i know i was speeding, but at that speed i was on the inside lane and everyone else was still whizzing past me.there does seem to be a dip in mpg around 70mph but then it increases again once you get to another speed. but you are doing quite low mpg possibly because of your short journeys and useing extra fuel because of it.it takes more fuel on start up than it does running.and the shorter the journey..the more start ups hence low mpg. take her for a run then see how she does.its all i can think of to do...then see what the mpg does.id go on a motorway or dual carraigeway or just a long drive down some roads but not town as then it will be stop and go at the mo with the easter hols. I recently got 546 miles to 3 quarters of a tank.once i red lined i put in 30 quid and got another 200 odd miles out of it before i refilled to the top. putting in 63.4 litres. take her for a blast....as she probably needs it anyway as everynow and then they like to stretch their wheels so to speak. mumof4 Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 what sort of mileage has it done see post 6 Nik...slipping dear boy.. slipping!! Quote
big_kev Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 yes i know i was speeding, but at that speed i was on the inside lane and everyone else was still whizzing past me. Please tell me they were travelling in the same direction as you ! Quote
