Bearing Noise From The Front, But Not Bearings

Hi People

Got a real problem with the Galaxy at the moment, i have had a noise coming from the car for a while, like a bearing noise. So when the car needed a service and was due for an MOT i had it checked out, me mate and i both thought it was from the rear at first so the local mechanic looked at it but couldn't find any problem with it at all. After the service and MOT the only things that came up were, anti roll bar links and front discs and pads.

About 2 weeks ago i decided to change the wheels around on the car and put fron to rearand rear to front, went well so i took the car out for a drive and the noise had got worse, i don't always drive the car it my wife usally so i might not of driven it for a few days, but the noise is a lot worse and when you brake and turn left you get a grinding from the front right.

Took it back to the mechanic and got him to drive it, he agreed that it was alot worse and said he thought it was front left bearing. The only thing that concerned me was, was it something that i had done when i jacked it up, told him where i positioned the jack and axle stands but he said that was fine, so it was bppked in yesterday(friday) to be done, he changed the front left bearing and then took it out for a drive and the noise was still there, so he took it to a mechanic mate who also drove it and he said front left bearing but it couldn't be as it had been changed, so they changed the right one but the noise is still there.

The mechanic hasn't got a clue, and i'm pulling my hair out as the blooby car has cost loads of cash since i've had it.

It is a Y reg 2001 1.9 tdi zetec.

It drives fine, nothing untoward except for this noise.

Has anyone got any ideas

Thanks[/size]

Sounds very much like the nearside drive shaft is breaking down.

Try taking left hand corners slowly and see if it gets worse.

Also get the grease level checked in the UJ inside the gater.

Actually when we go to our local Tesco, you come to a roundabout and you take the first exit and your normally braking and then turning left so all the weight goes to the front right and the noise is alot worse, like grinding.

There is a flanged shaft that runs out of one side of the gearbox. It might be worth looking at the condition of that mounting/bearing.

This is what Dingo is referring to - I had a similar issue - it definitely wasn't the CV's or wheel bearings (although it might be in your case) it was the half shaft losing splines!!
