Guest Gunny Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Can anyone help ? Whilst trying to replace rear brake shoes, I cannot get the cylinder to go back. I beleve you have to wind them back clockwise. One side okay the other will not wind back. any suggestions or is the caliper knackered? I have tried WD40 and appling pressure whilst winding. Quote
tiny Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Im sure on an old peugeot of mine, one of the pistons wound in clockwise but the other side was anticlockwise. Does this help?? Rock all to do with a Galaxy though!! Ive got my pads to change so will be interested to find out how you get on. Quote
El Dingo Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 IIRC I wound both mine back in clockwise... Quote
34laxy Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Haynes manual states clockwise direction for re-fitting the pistons. Manual covers Mk1 only but do not know if Mk11 is different. However this only applies if you take the pistons out of the caliper which sounds like you haven't. It may be that the piston is slightly offset in the caliper and suggest gently pressing the brake peddle to push the piston out a little to realign it. Get friend to help but do not depress peddle to floor as the piston will come right out. Hold the other piston in with a G clamp or piece of wood between piston and disc. Then with the bleed screw slackened off press the other caliper in gently using equal pressure at least each side of the piston face. If it gets really difficult you could take the caliper off the car but keep the brake hose connected. Support the caliper on a block of wood or similar but do not let it hang on the brake hose. With the disc out of the way you will find it easier to access the pistonI would avoid using WD40 at all costs as there is a risk that the WD40 may contaminate the system and/or damage the rubber seals. buford_t_justice Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Both caliper pistons definitely wind clockwise with pressure to retract. Done mine a couple of weeks ago. Quote

buford_t_justice Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 I use a brake wind-back tool. You can always get them from motor factors and Halfords etc.... Quote
