Was toying with the idea of using some of the mk2 Galaxy parts on my Mk1 galaxy.

Whats interchangable???

the sort of things im looking at is.

front wings

front bumper

Bonnet

them mod the mk2 headlights in.

dash board

speedo dials etc.

opening rear windows

rear door windows, or complete doors.

door cards and seats???

thats just a few bits im looking at maybe changing over time, but dont want to do to much cutting about.

Why would you want to do that mate? ...... Why not just buy a Mk 2. By the time you've swapped everything over the Mk 1 will be an antique anyway ....

oh, im loving the help you get on here

so 1st of dont bother as my car will be so old, its more then likely to end up in a museum, and taking the dash out is a rather hard job i take it. shame as my dash looks like it going to have to came out to find my dam water leak as i just cant find where the waters coming in.

So i take it no one likes to play with customising there galaxy then. Its all about fun fun fun and trying different things. Anyone can stick a set of wheels and lowering suspension on there car. im more for being different, Hence why im looking at fitting a rs2000 engine into my galaxy, and maybe look at turboing it at a later date.

Agree with Bleeno here, may as well just get a MKII.As no matter what you do with it...will still be a MKI.

thats ok, but 2 things stop me.

Cant afford the 8 grand price tag, and 2 i dont like the overall look of the mk2 galaxy, im looking at taking the good bits of the mk2 and putting them in the nicer looking mk1.

first off, the two MKs are different shapes.Different door cards, different bumpers, different lights etc.....Do what you like to it.We will help where we can.

Get no help on your own site i take it?.

If you want to be different then go ahead....but look at the two different galaxys then decide for yourself if you think it will fit from one to the other.

.basically from the list you first put up it sounds to me like you are trying to make a MKI look like a MKII!!..you want the front of your MKI looking like the front of a MKII.....???..so how can you say you dont like the look of the MKII???

I dont recall any member making a MK1.5/pretend MK11/hybrid which is why you got no answer to your query. For what it's worth the doors (for example) are "supposed" to be a different shape because wind deflectors for the MK1 allegedly wont fit a MK11.

Someone has removed and refitted the same dash with photo's here - thanks Nick...

dash removal

Seems a good opportunity for you do do some vanguard. Perhaps you could take some photo's as you go and tell us all about it?

All the best with it

There are a whole multitude of changes under the skin of the Mk 1 and Mk 2. The wings, bonnet etc are all totally different shapes. I think you should find that the doors are the same, the deflectors for Mk 1 not fitting a Mk 2 is a red herring. If the dashboards do swap over, chances are that all the wiring, connections to the instruments etc are all different and they won't work.

Sorry to bring what appears to be such bad news, but the 2 are effectively totally different vehicles that look similar. The change to a Mk 2 was much more than a facelift

Theyre gonna be the same shell, i mean there isn't technically a Mk2 anyhow, the "MK2" in reality is a facelifted Mk1 in the way that the Turbo in your signature isnt a MKIV, according to ford its a MK3 face lift! - Im gonna get slagged off for saying that!!

Sounds stupid I know, but ford actually call the rounded escort that came out on a H plate the MKIV and the very last escort (1998/9) model was a revised MKIV as it was still based on the 1990 shell even though its commonly referrred to as the MK7

Anyhow im way off topic so i'll (try to) get to the point.

What I was trying to get at was that as the shells are the same then in theory panels should be interchangable, but theres always gonna be details that will catch you out a bit like the windscreen scuttle panel on an early MK3 escort having a slightly different profile on the angled parts to the later face lift model (MKIV??) The bonnets would be interchangeble if the wings and slam panel/crossmember were also changed but the profile on the scuttle panel would be way different. There may be similar subtle changes in the MK2 Gal shell that would not be immediately apparent until the donor panels were offered up to the MK1.

As far as the dash goes, you would have to change a complete interior as all the panels blend into each other, dash to front door cards, front cards match rears, rears match rear quarter inserts and so on. Then theres the equipment level which changes between the 2 cars so you would have to wire in the latter instruments and equiptment to the earlier spec carjust to make the dash work.

This all sounds like an intresting project, but unless you have a donor MK2 sitting beside your MK1, then its gonna be one hell of a ball ache.

But hey, it'll make one hell of series of posts as you talk us through the work to date!

thank you  thats the sort of reply i was hoping for, i asked, as i was parked next to a mk2 galaxy at work, and TBH there not much i could see different apart from a face lift. IE doors looked the same, wings looked the same apart from different cut outs for the mk2 lights. Im defo thinking of digging deeper into this as i like a good project. lol Plus being an electrician and design engineer i think i can over come most problems im likely to come across.

i will keep people posted how things go.

As for not liking the mk2 galaxy, i dont like the rear end of it, just something about it im not keen on, i love the front end, plus with the added spliter on it, it looks lovely.

I could go with that - I like the Mk2 front end but prefer the Mk1 back end.

Helmsman, set warp to Mk1.5!

I'll bet the seats could be swapped (TeresaG had what looked like Mk2 seats in her Mk1 Si) and these are much better looking IMHO.

Before I bought mine, I drove both Mk1 and Mk2, and reckon that the ride and handling of the Mk2 is significantly better, so I upped my budget and bought a Mk2. I wonder how much of the suspension could be transferred from Mk2 to Mk1?

I'm also interested in wheels and tyres, as my Dunlops have *nearly* worn out. But, much as I'd like 18's, the ride quality might suffer too much.

Under the skin, the shells are different - a few more panels, strengthening members to beef up crash protection etc. If you are a design engineer, it's certainly a project worth serious consideration and I wish you good luck. I also prefer the rear of the Mark 1 to the Mark 2, but it's not an easy job to change the rear lamps and tailgate (the rear window is a different shape too)

MK1 owners have the real galaxy.........MK2's just have the surrogate (inferior copy......for the benefit of MK2 owners )version.

Go the whole hog.

Chop a Mk2 Galaxy behind rear doors

Chop a Mk1 Galaxy between the doors

Weld the Mk2 Front to the Mk1 rear and you have one very unique Galaxy with 6 doors and 8 or 10 seats depending on whether you have 2 or 3 seats in the middle two rows.

Hmmmm! Nice.

A stretch Galaxy Limo! :D

(Like on Top Gear recently.)

Now that's an idea... :D

I once saw an Escort that had been stretched exactly as described above.

It was on a low loader heading for the stock car track. Looking at the outside it looked exceedingly well done and you couldnt really see the join unless you looked inside and saw the steel plates stitching the two halves together. It was obviously a "quickie" job just to make a unique car for the banger race but it made you realise just how undetectable a "cut and shut" can be when done by people with criminal intent.

That Top Gear episode had me in tears... as do most of them. Best program on the TV. Watched the "Espace Convertable" the other day :D

The one where they hit an Espace with a train was the most scary though. The train was almost all the way through the vehicle before the thing started to move at all !!!!

Wow, thats the spirit!

Hope the following helps?

Seats - yes they are interchangeable, I have 1 fitted in my Shazza with no mod's needed either.

Pop-out rear windows are exactly the same motors & trim panels, so can also be changed (i've done this also.)

If i find anything else i'll let you know!

it'd be worth trying to get a copy of ETKA, you can then cross reference parts to see what could be interchangeable.

Best of luck.
