Hi there,

Apologies if this is covered somewhere already, but I can't find anything similar on the forum. My TDi Auto feels like the gearbox is slipping at times - after putting it in D or R it will sit with no drive for a couple of seconds or more, then give a loud clunk and jump forwards (or backwards). It seems to happen more often in cold weather, and when driving normally after this it can still feel like the forward drive is weak.

I'm hoping that it's down to low gearbox fluid - could that be the case? Or is it likely to be something more serious in the gearbox?

Thanks,

George

Just to update, the car went in for a service today. The gearbox fluid (and diff fluid) were both low, but the probable cause of the clunking noise was a badly worn gearbox mounting. Apparently it's a common problem, and the replacement part has been redesigned by Ford to avoid the same fate.

Mine is slipping intermittently in second gear or third but not so bad the gear is a little stiff too. how much is the fluid for a mark 2   02 Plate Galaxy?

Given the original post is 9 years old your unlikely to get an answer from any of the original posters, Eurocarparts website suggests its around £10 a litre

You might find something cheaper elsewhere, or a bigger containter at a better price. It may be worth looking at the current state of the fluid - if it smells burnt or looks like tar you may be better to drain and refill rather than just top up (it may take a few attempts to get most of the fluid out as some will remain in the box)
