HullHornet#30 Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 I touched on this briefly before but my new to me 03 1.9TDi Ghia is just coming up for its first 10,000 miles is it worth getting it serviced now or wait until the scheduled service time of another 6-7 months/8000miles? I've still got 11 months worth of warranty left. It seems its only been used for very short journeys if at all, the first service was at 6500 then ~8000 and then only ~8500. Any issues that might arise from it doing so few miles in the last 2 years? Just for info i tend to do up to 20,000 miles in a year if it makes any difference. Quote
tiny Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Short journeys are often the hardest on an engine, they are just getting upto running temperature when thing are switched off and left to go cold again. However, modern oils are much better at coping with such running conditions and performance of quality lubricants varies very little throughout the temperature range. I have no idea what the intervals are for Galaxies but usually they are stipulated as XXXXX miles or 12 months whichever is sooner. I personaly think that mileage is much more important than a specific time period unless you do very few miles, not a problem in your case. I would stick to the recommended service intervals (your warranty is probably dependant upon this!) and make sure that servicing is done with the correct lubricants. This point in particular is very important for PD engines such as yours. Quote
HullHornet#30 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 Thank you appreciate the reply, just a bit cautious now cause have thought we got a good deal in the past and turn out to be stung now after spending decent money don't want to be in the same boat down the road. Quote
buford_t_justice Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 It sounds to me like you're about to start doing some decent mileages in your new Galaxy, so if your 100% confident that the last oil change was done using the correct oil then I would just stick to the next recommended service. Any problems that may have occured through the low mileage in the last 3 years or so would have probably reared their ugly head by now. For what its worth, and I know there are plenty who would disagree, but I change my oil and filter every 5000miles. I appreciate that oil technology blah blah has improved over the last 20years but hey, that's just me! Quote
