The proud owner for a total of three weeks. Love almost every aspect of the car. Problem is though, the diesel is so quiet compared to my almost Focus that I'm picking up on any noice within the cabin. So far I've detected three different rattles which seem to kick in periodically in turn. Bloody annoying and hard to pin-point. Am I alone or does every Galaxy owner drive around with their stereos on volume 20!

24000 miles on from new, no rattles or any other noise whatsoever. Ever.

The engines' noisy though....and rough at 2500rpm

I'm into my 3rd alaxy and very fussy about rattles <_< My last two had rattl'y fuse compartment lids . . sorted by stuffing a glove inside them <_<

I've got a rattle from the driver's side of the dashboard in mine. Doesn't always happen, and is not speed-dependent either. If I get the time, I will try dismantling bits of trim etc. to look for the source.

Glad to hear I'm not alone guys. You must be very fortunate SA. I too am very fussy about little things like cabin noice (much too my wife's annoyance ). The ticking of the auxillary heater drove me mad to begin with  until a search on this great site informed me that it was perfectly normal. I was wondering whether rattles are something you can take up with the dealer or am I chasing a lost cause. Any example out there of solved cabin noice problems, other than stuffing gloves into fuse boxes? Why a glove?

 Why a glove? I had it in the car at the time I became aware of the rattle.

the left hinge was a lil loose and the glove was suitably sized to brace it

Got a rattle around the ashtray floor console area when the car is cold. Disappears when the car warms up. Will sort it out one day.

I'm glad to read that others have rattles too; I was ticked off  in another thread for saying 'It's a Ford, it rattles.' The implication was that Fords are essentially rattle-free, and that if it rattled it was due to me having been particularly evil in a previous life (or something of that sort). I have a number of rattles, only some of which are caused by bits and pieces (cassettes, shoes, lollipop sticks, toys, drink containers, football boots, bits of bike, locking wheel nut keys, fire extinguishers, torches, you name it) left lying around. It rattles a lot less than the Peugeot 306 cabrio, mind you.

I used to fuss about rattles (this annoyed my wife intensely for some reason) but I've stopped, and things don't seem to fall off the car. There are so many bits attached to other bits that the chances of a rattle indicating impending doom  are slight. In fact, I find that one can stop worrying about most things with no ill effects, so I've decided to worry only about things which I can sort out without much effort; car rattles are not in that category.

My experience from 2 cars is when new they are admirably rattle and squeak free. But as time goes on, the little rattles appear. Both have had something in the drivers door that annoys on long motorway runs - could be a loose wire or even the plastic sheeting. Slightly more disconcerting, after about 3 years both developed rear end groan/squeak when going right at that junction where there is a sudden camber change - or anywhere where the back end is forced to rock -feels as if the body is twisting more than it used to.

Misleading rattles:-

Empty cans in the drink holders aways rattle

Dealers that have had something off (in my case dash and front grill) dont tighten screws or even dont even put the screws back in.

Howard - Ford TIS has some TBs about rattling gear cables - unfortunately you need new cables to fix this as the inner cable rattles in the outer sleeve but your car might still be in warranty

" both developed rear end groan/squeak "

My old seat also made "flexing noises" when rising over kerb ramps/speed ramps etc. I got the feeling that the tailgate was moving in the rubber door seals. my later facelift galaxy felt more rigid,as does my current one. I was told that the post2k models were re-engineered with a stiffer build, which seems to be true

Also I am lucky to read I'm not the only one with a rattle car.

I am always saying: My old Volvo 940 at 9 years had less rattles (in fact 0) than my Galaxy when it came from the factory

I have rattles at the ash tray - solved it with a piece of paper, folded and folded and folded it, put it between the console and the piece where the ash tray is in and it was solved.

Rattles at the gear shifting lever at certain rpm's, rattles in doors, even when there's nothing in it. I put my mobile phone in the inner door handle, and there it rattles sometimes. This is no problem, I can put it elsewhere.

But the most important thing: ALL rattles are gone when you put a nice cd in the audio system, and turn the volume to at least the level of 15 :o
