Dave_Glasgow Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Hi everyone, Much more a lurker than a poster here usually, but hoping someone can give me a clue about this. Bog standard 2002 Ghia TDi - is that the 5000 unit I think? Just the other day the radio reception just stopped - I get the interference sound and can't pick up any radio station at all either by autoscan or manual tuning, it's like the ariel has stopped working. CD changer & tape both work fine. Might it be something as daft as a loose cable? If so, easy enough to get the unit out for a look or do I have to pick up radio pins? Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks! Quote
mumof4 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Id start by checking the cable at the back..also check the metal strip on the rear side window..as that is your arial. easy enough to get the HU out....I used pretty small allen keys and thin scredrivers to click in the holes. Quote
Guest wolfie Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 as stated first off check the connection to the rear most drivers side pop out window, check no one has knocked off the connection while wipeing the window? then pull the radio and check the connection in the rear is ok? have lost all wave bands? Quote
Dave_Glasgow Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) Hi , Thanks for such quick replies! Yes ,all bands lost. So, the aeriel is on the rear side window? Is that the rearmost one, where the CD changer drawer is? I guess it must be like a spade connection or something then, is that what I should look for? And assuming that looks OK, then remove the unit to look at that end of the cable? How many more questions can I put in a row? :) Thanks again. Edited March 21, 2007 by Dave_Glasgow Quote
steve67car Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 as it is a ford thousand series radio they have a habit of shitting their tuner pack is repairable i charge about 60_70 pounds to repair but as i am in northampton a little to far i guess easy way to test it out is -pull out the radio get another aerial plug it on the back of the radio and see what you get if still nothing then the tuner pack has died hope this helps regards steve :) Quote
Dave_Glasgow Posted March 24, 2007 Author Report Posted March 24, 2007 Thanks for that. Now, I had a look at the driver side rear window - the aeriel connection is the bit under the plastic cover, halfway along the top of the window I guess. Nothing obviously loose there - the black plastic shroud seems intact, but do I need to pull this of too to get to the actual connector to check? To test the tuner pack - do I just pick up an aeriel from Halfords or can I improvise something just for the test? If it is that, seems daft getting it repaired, I might as well bite the bullet and just buy a new replacement unit. As for removing the radio, my vast selection ( OK,some ) of precision screwdrivers don't help me with this as they don't quite reach.......... I'll pop out and buy some more. Quote
tiny Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 (edited) To remove the radio try using a couple of lengths of wire coat hanger bent into U shapes with "legs" about 8 cm long and just far enough apart to insert into the 2 holes on the side of the radio. Or any car audio store will sell the correct tool for about Edited March 24, 2007 by tiny Quote
Guest Andy1968 Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 aint there a ariel amp on them had this problem with ford and VW cars in the past when the ariel amp just gives up Quote
steve67car Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 this is correct hence the need to put a std aerial up its socket in the back to test the tuner on the set that way he can tick that box as tested ok therefore its an external problem and not a set problemcheers steve Quote
